Are you actually saying that in Meridies a weapon used in two hands isn't a two-handed weapon unless it's longer than 48"?

Why?

And who cares if it's a "bastard sword" (not even a period designation) or a "two-handed sword" or a "longsword"?

Good point! I have the same Canvas covering on the inside of my shield which is now decorated with a green splotch right in front of my face. THAT was an annoying new rule. I can understand wanting to mark inspected items but that was not one I was happy with. Perhaps the hospital bands would be a good way to go or the wire ties.
