re-wrapping the hilt of a viking sword

not to long ago i picked myself up a rebated viking sword(i honestly dont remember who makes it right now) anyways, the hilt originally had a piece of leather glued onto it, but, after some work at the pells it started to peal up at the seam. before i just glue it back down i was wondering if anyone had a better idea for wrapping the hilt.
it will be getting used for living history and re-enactments, so it's gotta be relativly period. any help is much apreciated.
