I saw a bunch of Archivers there this weekend. I introduced myself to a few.

Thaddeus...complimented me on my helm (we had met before. It was good to see him!)

D. Sebastian - his kit is EVEN better in person!!!

So lets do a roll call!!

It was a pleasure to meet you!

Titus Germanicus, well met!

Missed congratulating you on your Laurel you Sir Mord.

Ian MacD - didn't get to cross sticks. Next year for sure!

Thaddeus, thanks to you and your crew for a great Tournament!!!

Who else did I meet?

Oh, and Master Magnus, if my foot goes out of the box - I'm penalized. It says nothing in the rules about my head being out of the box!

D,

Thank you.

Birka was an exercise in insanity for me. Vigils. Fighting. Shopping. Dinner. Court. All too much, and not enough time to really talk to anyone. I did meet Adam of White Mountain Armoury, finally. I think next time, I will get a room, if for no other reason than to have a place to take a shower and then crash. Also, I will pick on activity and stick to it.

Mord.

D.,

Did you get a chance to meet my cadet? Did she behave herself? ;-) Take care. Hope you had a good time.

Your Excellency, I did!

She was welcomed into our Haus gathering room and our day board (which she brought food to!). Your Cadet represented you very well and it was our pleasure to have her around. I hope each of her needs was met.

Unfortunately, I lost track of her after the list opened and did not see her for the rest of the day after that.

There was this bag of with my name on it that contained 4 bottles of Julis Echter beer....
"Oh God, Julius... Yes!! YES!!! YES!!!"

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D

It was my first Birka and I had a blast.

I have to say, D was the most fun to fight. Yes, I'd say his kit really is better in person also. I'm debating the 3 hour drive to take in a practice with him once in a while.

There is nothing like a meat grinder to brighten up your winter. Alot of good fights out there.

First Birka, and may i say that IceFalcon, Eric Paetow (at Ironmonger), and Adam at White Mountain were all terribly nice to me and answered my inane newbie questions. A rotten shame it is that i was unable to get into the lists...

I saw a couple people I recognized from the Archive. I was the guy in the greathelm (I think the only one?) and green surcoat. Fun event, I learned a few things. :)

I was there as well. Don't know if I got to meet any of you. I was marshalling the first half of the tournament and only got to fight the last hour or so.

I was wearing a maille hauberk and Adam (WMA) helm with bronze nasal.

Birka always seems to be about cramming far too much into far too little time...

Definately and I wish we had more time to talk, but the line was really moving this year (Sorry, I was spacing when you asked me if I was Ian Mac D, Birkas bear pit puts me in a weird zone. I kind of only focus on my next fight/opponent). I hope you did as well or better then you expected to do.
I managed to place 15th despite being sick for 2 weeks.

Was this an SCA event or something different? Is there any reference to it?

Birka is an SCA event in a big hotel.
Heavy list in one big ballroom, fencing / youth fighting in another, shopping in the convention center, classes in the small convention rooms, Northern Army at the bar.

:D

The heavy list is 8 bearpits (winner holds the pit, looser reports the fight and gets back in line) and you fight for 3-4 hours.

I was there.... I didn't get up early enough to fight, but I watched for a while. It's captivating to watch.... an incredibly condensed concentration of styles to study.

How big were the squares, about 8 feet?

Greetings all. I am glad you all had a good time and felt the line was moving along fairly quickly - its a big challenge to get traffic flow to balance out right. I recognized Ian and a couple others. Sir Lothar was there as well as Sir Kenrick. I met Mord briefly - he was looking a bit fried by that stage of the game and my voice was pretty much blown out from various amounts of yelling.

Many many thanks to Tessa who is our MoL and her Husband Rich who has coded a nifty bit of programming to track the fights and determine the winner with a minimum of stress, and for being the large traffic cop at the end of the line. Also thanks are due to the others of the MoL staff who helped out, Fia and several others whose names I never quite got. Thanks as well to my marshals and the out of Barony marshals who took turns Master Feral, Master Padraig, Sir Manfred? Sir Lothar and several others whose names I did not catch as usual.

The Oxhides were roughly 10' by 10'. it is a rough and challenging day of fighting - and I saw and heard of very little uncool behavior, so well done everyone

Oh and particular thanks to the fighters and their support who cleared out the ballroom so expiditiously so that the hotel staff could set up for Court.

Hell yeah! I read on the results page that there were 140 fighters there. That is spectacular!

The other thing I thought was cool is fighting in a hotel. What a trip!

Odo

ps>what were the event fees btw. This sounds like a great place to hold an event during the summer months!

Most of the details are spelled out there. It's a great site as long as you can pretty much reconcile yourself with being a 'wierd convetioner'. There isn't a medievalesque brick in the place. So it feels very much like a tournament in a ballroom. But it is our BIG mdi winter shopping event, and I think the draw this year was somewhere just below 3000 people at the gate - although I dont know that Batujin has finished counting the receipts yet. So that is a guess on my part. We had 2400 last year if I remember correctly.
