New mace and hammer for SCA combat nearing completion... here's a couple pics. Heads will be tool dipped... there will be rounded tips, probably rubber, on the spikes of the mace and back spike of the hammer, and a leather face on the hammer part. I wish i had something more rigid for the spike faces, but I can't figure what. Half a golf ball maybe...

Very nice looking... love the handles and the stain.

What kind of rubber is that?

the usual... kayak foam. It's what I make most of my weapons heads out of. I've made a few... hammers, maces... i'm particularly fond of aves. I've got a nice Danish axe that is my primary weapon now. Many of them I face with rattan for a clacker, but some... like these... it does not work for.

Take some "super balls" and cut them in half then tape them to the spikes...

Yeah, thats what I'll prolly do. Still won't have that thump of a rattan edged weapon though.

I use half a raquet ball filled with silicon tub sealer for my mace. Plenty of give but still hits very solid.
Cheers,

Wow, I dig those. Can I have one?

Barring that, where do you get the kayak foam? I found some "kayak support" thing at a local outfitter, but it doesn't look like it'd be wide enough to do some of this stuff.

What you prolly found was the thinner stuff... ask them if they have thicker sheets for shaping. What I get is 3" thick, and comes in a skeet thats around 2' x 4'. A bit pricey, but it goes a long way.

It can be shaped with a small rasp, but I have been using a wire wheel in a drill press with great results... just don't slip, or you lose an hours worth of work really quick.

my next project inspiration is here: http://www.armor.com/2000/catalog/item010.html

Oh , and these will be for sale, not sure of a price yet, but I'm just as happy to teach someone to make them as sell them... possibly more so. These can be made by pretty much anybody. I need to actually do a photo essay when I make one of these.

Dimensions were helpful, I found some here (and ordered).

That would be most excellent.

Thanks!

Dang, thats even pricier. I get mine at the shop for that price, and it's a bigger sheet.

Have fun... making these is a really neat process, and I'm totally addicted. My technique has evolved, and I've got some good ideas to improve more... I just need to get more rattan. :D

I figured that $6 for the 3x6x24 piece would be enough for me to figure out "how stuff works" before shelling out more cash. I'll definitely be on the lookout for something bigger (locally).

I'll measure when I get home... my sheet may only be 1' wide, wich would make the price more comparable.
