Question... On the WIkipedia entry for the battle, it says that there were thirty participants on each side of the battle. Watching the videos and looking at photos from the battle, it does not seem as though there were sixty combatants on the SCA fighting field.

Are there in fact usually less than sixty participants in the SCA battle? Or have I just misjudged the number of men there?

I hope to attend Pennsic next year, and if that doesn't work out then I will surely make every effort to be there in '08. My 14th century harness will be complete and quite accurate looking by then, as well. It's almost "done" in its first stage now. Waiting on Wisby gauntlets, and a greaves from House of the Wolf.

I'd like to chime in with what Cet brought up. The 30 is the most amazing SCA fighting I have done. I get to show up with my best gear, and it counts for something.

The medieval knight was the equivalent of the Abrams Tank today. The height of military technology and brutally effective at its job. Before I fought in the 30 I had never felt that sense that a medieval knight must have had, that he was impervious to most harm, and his skill would cover the rest.

It is rough and tumble, I ended up with a black eye last year from the shots I took. I am not only OK with it, it made the thing work for me. No doubts about what people would think if I did not accept a shot, just stout men and women delivering real blows and accepting their opponent's judgement because there was little room for question. Unlike any other fight at Pennsic, I have never heard anyone from one of the 30's complain about another person's blow acceptance. Fight hard, hit hard, leave it on the field.

It should be about the fighting, because our looks should already be taken care of by now.

Most noble Lord, may I use this as my sig line? It is EXACTLY how I feel about SCA combat.

With my Blessings, Leo. The Thirty has become my most looked forward to event of the year, because no one whines afterwards and I know I got hit.

Sixtus, thank you for your grace in a tough situation. You did get hit alot. :D Next time bring a friend to take half the blows for you!

Leo,

I just saw Animal Weretiger's tag line, and it is one of my all time favorites and it is one of your statements. Awesome phrase!
