Revival's "Light Sparring Gloves" - Opinons?

Post by Alexander »

Servus!

Was thinking about ordering a pair to sew into my new gauntlets. They look like they provide a certain amount of protection from the padding and that they are of good quality. Anything is better than a set of El Chaepo welding gloves or those deerskin gloves that stain my hands yellow for weeks afterwards (the "do you have hepatitis?" questions I get from my colleagues are a hoot, though... )

Has anyone used these for SCA Armoured Combat? How did they perform? Quality of the glove itself?

Thanks for your input!

I got a review on these back in July and I love them.

I don't know how they work for the SCA, but for steel combat, they work great! I have taken a lot of shots with minimal injury. I haven't broken a finger or bled since I got them (knock on wood). Now I am just waiting for my Armour and Castings gauntlets to get here for a little added protection.

Thaks mike - I guess that I put in the wrong serach parameters and came up with bupkis - otherwise I wouldn't have wated everyone's bandwidth.

They sound like a good pair of gloves. I'm planning on ordering shoes from Revival and might think about putting these in the order as well. Thanks!

I ordered a pair intending to use them as the base gloves in a pair of finger gauntlets.

They are very high-quality, and look really nice, BUT:

They run small. I have long fingers, but don't have big hands, and the XL gloves fit tightly enough that it takes effort to close my hands into a fist, and the leather pinches me when I do so. (I wear a size 8 glove for dress purposes, and a 9 when I want a little slop-room)

The leather is heavy enough that with the approx 1/4" padding on the outside of the hand, they will absorb quite a bit of the impact of a blow that otherwise would probably have you hopping around saying bad words, and they won't be wearing out in the thumb/palms for quite a while.

But they do run small. I wish they made an XXL, because they are totally the deal for finger gauntlets.

Also good to know - I have Real Big Hands™ and I thought that the XL size would be fine.

I got whacked pretty good on the thumb at WWLD cut the surface leather, small bruise on my thumb.

I'd use em in a finger guant.

I will echo Saint Sever. I have the XXL and they are still tight. And I don't have big hands. Part of it is the padding really cuts down on the flexbility of the glove, but it is a trade off. It does cause problems in the gripping the sword department sometimes.
You have to push the little yellow button to load it.

Look like motorcycle gauntlets
Our duke uses them in place of demi-gaunts.
I don't know as I'd use them by themselves, but yeah, under a pair of finger gaunts, sure.

Several people here in the Schola Saint George use them and they all say they love them. They provide good protection when practicing poste and colpi, but they all switch to gauntlets or lacrosse gloves for sparring.

I'd not suggest using them for SCA heavy fighting except as extra protection under a basket or cup hilt, or under gauntlets.

They'd probably be OK for SCA rapier, as that's the sort of thing they're designed for.
