Period Performance (tm) [SCA]

Post by Saburou »

So just what is Period Performance (tm)? It's using period fighting and armoring techniques, materials, styles, etc, to get your kit and your martial skills to a competitive level. It's an alternative to what some may feel is excessive modernity on the field, and it's an acknowledgment that the folks "back then" knew what they were doing - even if that's not precisely the same thing we're doing. It's also something I don't know as much about as I'd like.

This thread can hopefully be a place to post ideas about how to achieve Period Performance, for those of us with aspirations but not the decades of experience possessed by some on these boards.

I'll start with a couple of suggestions for Japanese personae:
- Lacquer, Rustoleum style. Several (3-4) good coats of spraypaint have prevented tons of upkeep on mild steel armour. No need to sweat stainless.
- Tsubo suneate with a proper - 3-4 layer cloth backing. Just finished mine. The cloth makes them hang on solid, comfortably, and with the weight so evenly distributed, it's comfy legs all day.

Who else has helpful info?

What i think Angus is referning too is high quality replicas in proper thickness made from hardened steel.

Stuff like from Cet, HE on up to Mac.

Period weight period function period performance

My current stuff is easy to wear weight wise...well till i put on the helmet.

Helmet almost doubles teh weight of the rig.

The Bp does prohibit some movement and so do the guants but not much. wayyy less than what i was wearing before, even accounting for basket hilts.

Cet's guants are great.
