The 14th Century sub-Game/World

Time to organize. This means that when you interact with another 14th Century Mafia Type you are expected to know certain things (have you read Daily Life in Chaucer's England?), behave in a certain way, believe certain things, wear certain clothes, have a certain type of camp, and fight in a style that is fluid, meaning you apply regular SCA rules to those who are not part of this experiment, so you don't end up expecting people (who don't know what you are about) to behave the way you expect other 14th century types to behave. I am sure Rhys has already decided the combat rules for when we are playing among ourselves. I fully accept the concept of the grille as open-faced helmet, because a spear-point is much more likely to slip through an actual grille visor anyway. This way if you are thinking open-faced helmet or literal grille visor the effects are the same.

Everything 14th century is our culture. Everything not 14th century is not. The 14th century types know how SCA culture works, and can apply it when they are not dealing with another 14th century type.

It is time to unify the culture & expectations of the 14th Century Mafia.

The Game is on. Get your coins, sharpen your skills, hire a Herald. Squires are still squires, though until they earn their spurs. Why? Because you need to prove yourself through rising above the wider fighting population. I have already explained why you need to learn two different games.

Organize?

Like, for example, by forming an inter-kingdom tournament company? Where people have to submit pictures and documentation and petition for membership? Where leaders like Rhys and yourself are formally recognized and INVITED to set standards and goals and the members won't squeal when you say their kidney-belt-over-a-tabard isn't good enough? Where there are kit guides and documentation guides and reading lists focusted solely on 14th century chivalric culture?

I personally wouldn't be worthy to join such a company...but the very existance of one would push me to work towards becoming worthy.

Would a good first step be requesting a 14th century forum on the AA?

Hey James, love your "I want You" poster! You should finish it and make a T-shirt!

I don't get the whole puppet reference though?

Reference to "The Godfather." Frankly I thought the "I Want You" poster was a little better, but that's me.

And hey, can I technically be allowed in the 14th c. Mafia with my 1305 English portrayal? I mean, I won't get the spiffy bascinets or half plate arms and legs, or the shorter tunics... But come on, man! I get ailletes!

*sigh* /Putting plans for the complete 15th cent kit on hold. Getting to work on the 14th cent stuff./

Why does everyone have to be organized 100 years to early? :( Anyone want to do Rene de Anjou era tournies in appropriate armor?

Not to fear; I want to do that too. My goal is to have a kit for several major eras.

If you are already there you don't need a group to tell you, you already know your kin. If they are foreign to your world, then they are foreign and nothing more need be said. The SCA is just a backdrop we operate within. We can play stick as well as rebated as needed. It's a mindset as well as a style.

Well most of us do know each other, but there are guys on here who have not met "us" I mean everyone V mentioned i know on sight, and i'm pretty sure they know me.

I know the guys in the 30 by rig if not by name. But not every 14th Century guy does.

believe it or not, there are people who have not met Vitus.

I think what he's talking about is bringing the guys that aren't already doing "it" but are doing the period into "da family" so to speak.

There are _lots_ of 14th century folks in the SCA

only a few are "mafia"

But i know what ya mean, i remember when it seemed like Lex Bob and me and maybe 4 others were 14thcentury in Meridies. Now it seems like all the newbies i run accross are and half the people in Wisconsin.

It's odd to be the "in thing"

Yes this is exactly what we need! As suggested in another thread some form of favor or emblem, like the AA favor, would be a good way to recognize our fellows in the field and when travelling to other kingdoms or large scale events. I would put forth a specific colored garter, perhaps buckled around the forearm or bicep, as a means to eaisly recognise each other. They could be worn in and out of armour.
My two pence,
Leo

We don't need no stinkin' badges. If you're dressed as a proper man at arms of the 14th century, chances are decent to good that you'll be able to know the other aspects also.

But if you have a hankering for a badge of some sort, I have pewter 14th century mafia secular badges.

Not everyone who wears 14c armour is in or wants to be in the mafia, ergo my earlier post. I think this is a good thing and I take it seriously, I would love to be able to walk up to someone who is wearing a recognizable badge and be able to trade blows or conversation with out bothering folks who just happen to have decent kits but strictly play SCA classic rules.

Jehan take 5 min away from hawking your wares to turn this over in your mind, althow I understand why you would be wanting a bit of extra cash these days! :D

Cheers,
Leo

I definitely like the idea of some sort of marking to distinguish those that wish to be in, and those who know no better.

Would definitely make it a little easier on those of us who choose not to wear glasses, and are not likely to identify a kit before I'm smellin the person in it.... :P

And Otto.... nice comments man... I think they fedora might piss off some people possibably within your family lol....

Thats it! Fedoras and pickle barrels for all
