Thanks Gunthar! Appreciate that.

There were 6 cameras in use for most of the day (until batteries died, anyway). My wife was coordinating the volunteers on the other 5 fields as well as filming one for most of the day. I'm not sure what other fields she has video from, but all of the video has been sent to TRM West. I assume there will be DVDs available eventually. We have also requested that we get back the dozen tapes we provided, with the video still on them, after the video has been copied off so we can upload those videos, too. So there will be another field or two on those. It may be a while before we get those, though.

Don't remind him, poor Ceddie was stuck on a four hour flight next to an annoying drunk guy. I think our Cedric has the patience of a saint, I'd have konked the guy with a stale bagel an hour in.

 The helmet is tall enough it helps that impression of height. :) If I only picked on people my size, I wouldn't have half the number of losses I've wracked up over time. Those little guys (and gals) and dangerous. :)

The airlines need to go back to using the old trick of giving the drunk an extra drink and then depressurizing the cabin another thousand feet or two. The drunks go right to sleep and leave everyone else alone.

yeah, they might have tried that, but this guy was on his sixth (or so) half-liter(?) bottle and still going strong. I was impressed, Ceddie was annoyed, and William was amused. Typical for our kind of trip.

So, what's the story behind shields out west? I see lots of flat, square shields, wankels, and tiny heaters. I'm not so bemused by their size and their shape. Is there some historical presedence I'm unaware of? Or is it a matter of western knights passing their styles down through the generations?

There are now a few fights from Argent up. Her camera swapped places so it could be plugged into the only extension cord handy to recharge the battery for a while.

Skutai --
Historically, West has had a cultural preference for smallish shields; there is a commonly held belief that a smaller shield requires more technique to fight with, and leads to a more challenging and elegant fight. Like in other places, specific shield styles go in waves -- we were all about heaters in the 90s, then there was a wave of squares, followed by a recent emergence of center-gripped kites. Recently, shields have been getting bigger, as well. Just a cultural thing.

I met Hauek Duke Bender a few weeks ago, and when I faced him on the field I noticed his tiny heater, so I grabbed my buckler. BIG mistake.

Next time, I switched to my shield and had a bit better time of it.

I think it sort of goes like this:

Duke Paul: Flat strapped round
Duke Radnor: Flat strapped "half round" aka bunny round
Dukes Uther and Jade: Flat strapped square.

(all these shields are based on the 24" round with 2-4 corners added)

That many crowns (40 ish) won will set up a whole passel of tradition and dogma (right or wrong)

HRM Gemini is a fan of the wankel shaped heater, with curved sides (he straps it uniquely as well).

Duke Hauoc had his own "tiny kite" - maybe 18" wide, but long enough to block your leg - and there are a few others who still fight with shields like that. He has been fighting with the "tortilla chip" for a couple of years now.

Recently there has been a trend to go with centergrip rounds and kites... and Titus recently won crown with a centergrip kite.

One interesting effect of "small tourney shields" is that because they are mostly useless for war fighting (at least forming shield walls), many westerners have an extra large war shield, rather than fighting with their tournament shields.

I think "historicity" of shield shapes is a tricky subject, because the effectiveness of shield shape is so tailored to the game you are playing - and in fact heavily influenced by the blow counting system, knee fighting, no grappling, etc.

I get "server not found" when I click the vids on meowzettes.com

Any chance I could buy a DVD or three of the whole thing? I'd love to have better than youtube quality vids.

DVD's will be offered as soon as they are edited and ready for production at least that is my understanding from TRH Gemini king of the West, at least for a few more hours.

Everything is coming up ok, now. Must have been a problem with teh hosting company last night.

I believe TRM are planning to release a DVD of Prova. I don't know how many fights will actually be on it, as ther were over 800 for the day, and something like 30+ hours of video taken. Now, 1/2 or so of that can be editted out if all someone wants is stick swinging, but that's still a lot of video.

The editting of TRM's project won't start until after today (when they step down). I expect it will take a while to complete. Once iot's done, we should get back another 12 hours of video that we'll also edit and put up on YouTube. I'll talk to my wife and see if she has any plans to do higher res copies of everything. I know she has a request or two for higher res copies of a specific person's fights.

I'd be happy to sit through the raw footage if someone wants to save time editing ;-)

I'm such a geek. I'd love to have fighting I haven'y already seen in the background on my big HD set while I sit on the couch posting from my laptop. 30 hours would last me like 2 months or more

We appreciate your flexibility, but this is La Prova Dura - we do have some standards to up hold :D

The Shire of Canale (with assistance from lots of folk - thank you Aeschine, Dan, et al) is working on the videos and plans to make the DVD available. We did however just complete a rather large event and if some of us don't spend some time on our day jobs we are going to have more time on our hands than we planned on.

It's coming, we promise. It won't be ready next week.

Else (but the website with the lists of who was on which field might be ready next week)

We're happy to help out. :) We also found anotehr DVD with some of finals on it, so we'll get that mailed off as soon as I can get a copy of it made.

For those enjoying the videos Aeschine has put up, it takes time to edit and upload, but she's adding to it every day and has also gone back and corrected name spellings and so on as well as what fights were in which round where we couldn't tell from what the heralds were saying. Thanks to Duke Paul and Else who provided the lists of fighters and round pairings. :)
