A small note about calontir

Post by freiman the minstrel »

The thread about combat units brought this to mind, and I was not sure I had ever shared it with this archive.

A few years ago, I posted a thread about looking for big guys to be bodyguards for Robyn during the big battles at Pennsic. Not necessarily somebody to protect her from harm, but somebody to be the big guy witness, because some folks just like to injure the little person. If you remember, I was really stressed about that.

A couple of guys volunteered, and they acquitted themselves honorably. They also told me that they had a great time.

But, due to several circumstances, they weren't there during the town battle that year. You remember that one. I didn't quite understand the rules, but the commanders did, and I got to hit people.

I watched several members of the Iren Fyrd notice that Rob's body guards didn't show up that battle as we were walking out the field.

We lined up, and got ready to fight, and if I am remembering correctly, Vels, Medium Rory, and Uileag (from house of the wolf) just sort of wandered up with big purple scutums, smiling at Rob and I, and saying "We just came along to make sure that things went OK."

Rob engaged in honorable combat that day, and, on some occasions got whacked really hard. One person told me "We saw her go ass over teakettle over a haybale from a great sword shot." Her leg harness was caved in from some blow or other, and she was grinning like an idiot at the end of the battle.

But the big, burly Fyrdmen said to me afterwards that "everybody was just fine. It was ugly, nasty, burly fun."

Just thought I would share that.

That's how our combat should be! Great story. Was the Calontir's party the night before? Perhaps that's why they were not there
