So I have decided it is time to get my kit in order starting at the top.

I really like the idea and look of the Kettle helm. I am not sure how well it works in the SCA. I have not met any one who has one so I am asking if any of you have or know someone who has used one. So please sound off with any pros/cons you might have and anyone who you feel has a really good/bad design.

My persona if it matters to you is Scott right after the first crusade. Thank you all for your input.

Love mine and yes they work great for SCA fighting. Great in melees: lots of air and great field of view.

I've decided on getting a kettle hat when I am done with school and making more money because they're so damn cool looking. I was wondering though if they were used later into the 14th century as well. I like the late 14th century look and when I'm able to buy a really nice helm I want to start building a better kit to match.

I've used various helmets through the years and I gotta say, for melees a kettle rocks. The visibility and air flow just can't be beat for me. I love it.

Nice picture. I saw a helm like that for sale a while back and was wondering if the cut outs on the front of the brim were period?

Yes they are... they allowed the brim to cover down over the head more.

I cant help but think the kettle saw a longer military service period than any other helmet.
Its an excellent choice for sca fighting. If the grill gets you down you can cover it with maile which looks slick.
They came in a variety of flavors with certain styles found in different regions etc

Adam does great work...here is Halberds first SCA legal kettle he ever did ...I am strapping it now...Woot!!!

Nice looking hat! Now I saw one with the cage all the way around a while back and was wondering how one would pad and strap it. I would love to see more pictures after you are done.

Padding is in the top..with a 4 point chinstrap ..you don't pad the sides.

Do you hook the straps to the bars or drill holes in the hat?

Tie the straps to the back bars, through the chin cup, up to D rings at the temple in the kettle and down to tie at or under the chin. Adam at WMA puts a little ring right at the front as a tie point or you can just pass the straps through the bars and tie them in front.
