Question: Does the Mid have a three points of contact rule like we do here? His Highnesses basket is clearly posted on the floor when he looses the second fight. (Not that it matters for the result, I'm just curious about interkingdom conventions.)

If I recall correctly, as I was standing right behind his his highness during the fight, the killing blow was strike to the head right after the body blow. You can hear his highness saying "No" to the blow to the body. It also appears to me that he was repositioning himself and not defenseless. However, I'm not sure if due to the intensity of fight that this was overlooked by the marshals but I'm sure HG Palymar, can clarify it better.

Midrealm conventions stipulate that a Helpless opponent is not struck, but there is no specific 3-point rule.

Sometimes it is easy to tell when someone is Helpless: They are on their back, they are weaponless, they are tangled in the ropes.

Sometimes it is not so easy to tell. For example - someone that is off balance. They may be Helpless by the rules or they may just be in a bad defensible position.

A good example happened at this past Crown. An opponent spun and tried to run away from his opponent. His opponent was quick and ran him down striking him in the back. His opponent obviously could not defend himself against the blow, but he was not, by convention, "Helpless" since he choose to expose himself that way.

I was about 8 feet max away from His Highness during that bout and I do not recall ever feeling that His Highness was Helpless.

In these kind of borderline cases, it becomes very important that the two combantants communicate to each other what is going on, because only they know exactly what is going on in the fight.

From our Atlantian Conventions of Combat:

3.6.1.9.2 Calling a Hold

3.6.1.9.2.1 In single combat, hold will be called when a fighter is not capable of defense. In single combat, defenseless is defined as having no weapons in hand.

3.6.1.9.2.2 If a fighter falls, or if any portion of a hand, arm, or a part of the upper torso or head touches the ground the fighter is considered defenseless. A fighter who feels that he is not defenseless in any of the above conditions may ask the marshals not to call hold in a specific circumstance. If the marshal feels that the request would not create a dangerous situation he will not call hold in the specified situation.

I really want to congratulate His Higness on a well-fought tournament and express my delight in his victory. I have sat in many a war counsel with Theo and always found him to be a perfect gentleman and damned fine fellow. I look forward to sitting in war counsel at Gulf Wars.
