I had trained a post by Audax on "Apartment Pells," then realized
this is not about apartments. It's about everywhere! Maybe even
good for travel!
I live in Brooklyn and have no room for a pell as
such, but I've been playing with construction for what I like to call
NYC-Pell sticks. Padded pell sticks that can be used on telephone
polls. I've been doing this for about 9 months now, and it is great.
I typically run a strip of leather down each cutting edge and tape
it up like a mother. Then I either run a couple miles, stopping every
telephone pole or three to wack fifteen times or so, or just imagine
a fly by scenario (block, leg shot, high wrap, get out).
Also, under the Brooklyn Queens Expressway they have these
awesome drain pipes that are like a foot in diamete. I can practice
on an imaginary targets thirty feet tall. A Goliath pell, if you will.
And it's covered, so rain, snow, goblin att... Rain or snow [nods].
Has anybody else played with something to this effect? Do you
have any designs for bolstering your rattan to last longer? Mine
usually come apart in two months at best, but I do NOT practice
with the idea that light work trumps hard work; I think
they're both important, and I do lay on at times.
I'm also currently experimenting with wrapping a stick in bike
tubing, but that's been pretty ineffective twice already.

Just don't get yourself picked up by the police
If you're hitting things with the rattan stick that are harder than the rattan, you're going to break it down. Sounds like yours are lasting reasonably well for what you are doing with them.
Consider getting undersized (and cheap) rattan and padding it up a bit. It won't last any longer - perhaps not even as long - but you should be able to get enough of a price break to make it more cost effective.

That's a really good idea. I like it also because I can play with
the weights more. Thanks so much for the thought.
And yeah, I had one stick last two months, but ran through
four others while that one kept trucking. They always fray
and break at the end, but then I just retape and retape. This
guy was a champion. It was probably the fiber density.

Oh and I haven't had police problems in Brooklyn. Twice
cops have come by and asked WTF are you doing, boy?!
And I calmly explain that its an old martial art form I'd
rather not name, and they've just laughed or said don't
break anything.
Manhattan is a different story. The parks are their virgin
daughters, the trees symbolizing continuing purity. I've
only had to run once, and though that is very not chiv.,
the fine is like 1000 bucks!

Boden, I have a piece of siloflex that I use for pelling. You could make a rattan cored siloflex sword, that way it would last longer but still have the same weight as your regular swords. I also have a completely broomed out old stick I use when I want to hit things hard but not ruin a good stick.

The problem I have with old brooms is eventually
they start spitting a lot of dust. Every hit emits
this little cloud of rattan hell. Gets in the eyes.
Siloflex should last longer plus it'll keep the broom together. Make sure to at least put some strapping tape on it, just one layer over the sweet spot should be plenty.
I have one completely broomed old stick that I can pull individual fibers out of, haven't had any dust storms just yet.

I have made a very light pell stick out of a pice of thin bamboo that I cut to sword length, taped a grip and put a trigger on it. It is the kind you find at a florist, dirt cheap too.
I mainly use it on my indoor pell, wich is an old upplight lamp that I taped cell foam on to save the stick and my ears.
The plan with the light stick is one, it does not damage the inside of the apartment as much as a pice of rattan if (when) an accident happens and two it does not strain the arm as much as doing the same thing with rattan, also gives me an oppertunity to "feel" what happens with the stick.
