Cut and Thrust Hand Protection

Post by Boomlaor »

I'm working on putting together a set of armor for cut and thrust here in Artemisia. Our armor standards require the following for hand/wrist protection:

The hand and wrist joints must be adequately protected from impact at all times, to include the fingers, thumb , the metacarpal, and the wrist joint to at least 1 inch above and below the points of the wrist. This protection may consist of a gauntlet constructed from a minimum of 8 oz unhardened leather or equivalent material, or some combination of gauntlet or demi-gauntlet and knuckle bow of a swept hilt basket. The gauntlet should be well secured and not allowed to slip up or down the hand.

So, those of you who are already doing cut and thrust (in Artemisia or in other kingdoms), what do you use for hand/wrist protection? I'd really like something lighter/less bulky than full on finger gauntlets (and less expensive than finger gauntlets wouldn't go amiss either), but I do want my hands to be safe.

My thanks in advance.

I'm using standard mitten gauntlets. Trying to save up for fingered bell cuff gauntlets.

Everyone else up here uses fingered gauntlets.

Darkwood has a padded glove that might work - http://www.darkwoodarmory.com/store/ind ... cts_id=318.

I"ve been casting about at motorcross shops for a pair of lo-profile matte black gloves to do the trick. Should be cheap, too; at least cheaper than finger gauntlets! yikes!

So far, I've used a combination of:

Demi-gauntlets (always) with my regular fencing gloves and either the Darkwood mid-16th C. basket, or the Darkwood Arms & Sidering sword.

For longsword plays, I've used regular gloves and demis, OR the Revival kevlar-padded gloves and the demis. I find that the Kevlar padding makes the gloves a lot more stiff, and I have problems moving my hand quite so freely.

I've also got a pair of unhardened leather demis that are a clamshell pattern, but missing the last 1-2 lames that cover the fingers, and only cover the first joint or so of the thumb. Those and regular gloves are, thus far, my favorite combination. You occasionally take some shots to the fingers, but only when you screw up and block with them.

I count such failures as my own fault, anyway. :D

This is what i wear. It started out as a variant from Rainalds demi pattern. Then i added the fingers to it for sidesword. i patterned out the leather fingers, then just cut the finger plates out from 1 1/4 pallet banding and riveted them in place.

I dont use any padding in them, and if i get hit square in a finger tip it stings for a couple seconds, but no bruises or anything.

I don't do SCA C&T, but I swear by my Revival kevlar-reinforced fencing gloves.
