Making a Mace besides Kong heads.
Meridies has a rule apparently that disallows the use of Kong headed maces.
I've heard of people using foam with splints etc. If any of you have made a mace this way how did it work out for you? Did it hit with authority?
Any "how to" advice would be much appreciated also.
Best wishes,

my method of making a mace involves Rattan, 3/16 nylon rope and strapping tape..
Tape end of rope to rattan and spool very very tightly around the rattan the length of your striking surface one pass. Tape but do not cut rope.
Then do another wrap across your striking surface but not quite as tightly as the first. Tape but do not cut rope.
Third pass is wound even more loosely than second wrap tape off rope and cut excess off.
Cover striking surface with strapping tape. Do not pull tape tight over the rope simply cover the rope as it is.
Use duct tape over strapping tape to cover.

Check with the local marshals about this but I've seen some nice maces done by wrapping a layer of camp foam around the business end of your haft and then adding 3 or 4 pieces of split rattan in equal segments around the edge. Since you're building a head you probably need to experiment to get your progressive give. The design is flexible enough you can build a light sword-like mace or a heavy post-driver.

I used to build the "Toilet paper roll" mace.
Ingredients: Roll of T.P.
Mace length of rattan, Needs to fit into the T.P. roll
Strapping tape
Duct tape
6 Rattan splints, make'em shorter than the roll's length.
Lanyard
Tape the roll of T.P. on to the rattan stick. Wrap the shaft in tape. Place the splints on the roll and tape down. Add a lanyard and you are done.
It always hit with authority and always passed inspection. I did get picked on about the "Poo-Stick".

I recently heard of someone making thier macehead using rubber doorstop wedges. This produces a nice flanged looking macehead.
I've been leary of the kong maces and don't quite see how they conform to sca regs. Are people padding them to get the neccessary "give"?

Superballs!!
I tried that once. Rattan, foam, heavy leather & superballs that had been cut in half. I did not like how the weapon would bounce away in un-predictable directions. Also because of the bounce I had a hard time with making kills, I guess that it did not "feel" right. Your mileage may vary.
Now I am wondering about this "Soft ball" mace. Anyone? Did Freiman the Minstrel get a PM on how to do this?
