Recently after fighting my right knee has been giving me a lot of trouble. I believe I have aggravated an old football injury from high school (or I've injured my knee in a totally new and unique way.)
I'm looking into purchasing a knee brace but I am unsure about which kind to get. What type of brace would offer me the support I need but allow the range of motion our activity requires?
Is there anyone out there with experience fighting in a knee brace that could make a recommendation or offer some suggestions?

I would suggest talking to your Ortho Dr. To see if this is simply chronic tissue damage or if it is structual damage. That will really determine if you need something with a hindged bar support or if you just need something to support the tissues around the knee. As someone who has had severe leg trauma ( I had a landing gear of a F-15 dropped on me, crushed all the tissue from the knee down in both legs) I would suggest that just ignoring it and getting a wrap so you can continue fighting might make it worse. Hope it really isn't anything more that a strain.

I had a knee issue in HS football as well. As it is a very specific pain in a very specific area, I can recognize the same type of injury and apply the treatment previously prescribed by a Dr. , which is to stay off of it as much as possible, and to use a neoprene knee brace for support until the pain subsides....
... ok, so I just put on the knee brace and keep going as usual
. The Neoprene brace adds just enough support without seriously restricting movement. I can fight in it with almost no trouble. (I try to avoid prolonged fighting from my knees for circulation reasons.)
If I weren't certain what the issue was, or if it didn't get better, I'd see a doctor.
Hope this helps!

make sure that its actually the knee causing the issue.
I have a plate and screws in my ankle, which I need to tape up to prevent further injury when fencing. Doing that now puts more strain on the knee as its the next joint up the line. I do brace my knee with a neoprene brace with a hinge. But many common knee injuries are caused much further down and alleviating the symptoms doesn't mean the problem will go away. When you check with your orthopedist, make sure to wear the same shoes/boots you would that you are having the problems in when you fight.
