First finger gauntlet ouchie.

Well it finally happened. I was hit on the very tip of my right ring finger with a greatsword and the blow was so friggin hard that the gauntlet tip etched two huge cuts in the rattan where the plate bottomed out. My finger looks like a grape. Being a psycho, I switched to sword and shield and probably just made it worse. It was a very fun day.
DON'T BLOCK WITH YOUR HAND!!!!!!!!

Did you take it?
One more reason hand shots should count in the SCA.
Then again, so should everything else....

Well this is how I see it. You don't ever want people aiming for the hands, which is what the monkeys will do if you treat your own hand-blocking like what it is- a loss.
I just make sure everyone knows when it happens so I look properly lame.

sounds like you need the steel to wrap over the end of your finger down to your weapon so it cant crush your finger.
and blocking with your hands is Target substitution so stop doing that.

It does cover my fingertip, dude. The fingertip plate was driven into the rattan so deeply that my finger still got smashed. It's healing fast...the gauntlet worked great!

I started taking hand shots as arms (and lost 2 fights because of it). Nobody has cried yet.
Handshields...

That's why I had Jackie (Shamrock Armoury) make me a set of Handshields for my finger guantlets -- for when I fight Greatsword (primarily) or polearm (secondarily).
You know the ancient and venerable SCAdian joke.

Would now be the time to offer you a pair of lovely finger gauntlet bucklers that I have no intention of ever using?
I'll bring them Tuesday.

Sir Vitus does not block with his hands, but shit happens.
I try and curb my Swordbasket blocks. If I'm hit in the basket I ignore it...'If I put my basket in the way twice I take the lose(pratice).
Sir Vitus is the One who brought it to my attention about how bad my basket blocking had become. And with His help I have gotten much better at not blocking with hands/baskets.

I got smashed in the finger by a baskethilt last practice, that was kinda owie. I was throwing the shot and he just wolloped me. I lost most of the strength in my grip for a bit, and was pretty much done for the night.
He was pretty new, so I dont really know what he was trying to do. I assume it was a panic block.
Teach me to let my guard down when fighting new people!

I have had my hand busted up twice now. I'm 24, i'm way too young to get broken for real, and i really like my hands.
now i use basket hilts, or weapons with hands far from the action (spear), or things with tsubas on them.
soon i will be able to afford tank gauntlets that have double-rivet thumbs and beeftastic clamshells. Then i might look at a greatweapon again.

point taken.
i do differentiate between "pain" and "injury" though. Pain is fine. Injury is not.

Hedinn-
You know how new guys throw their hand at a target instead of the sweet spot? You know how they panic-throw to the center point of the opponent, because they are too freaked to pick a target?
He did both.

Aw geez, Sir Vitus, don't you know better than to fight new guys? They are dangerous!!
Sorry you got hurt, kinda impressed that's the first time. My left thumbnail seems to turn black when I so much as look at a glaive -- and I use clamshells!

If someone hits my hands hard enough that I notice through my gauntlets, I consider myself "dead, through embarrassment".

I wasn't fighting a new guy, I was temporarily fighting like a new guy. This was quickly corrected, and the beating commenced with no further damage to my finger.

I don't know if you can do this with finger gauntlets, but on the inside of my clamshells i put thin rubber tubing...it acts as a great shock absorber...

I'm glad to see you have what I consider to be the correct type finger gauntlets. Some of the guys around here have the type that does NOT bottom out on the rattan. Just slightly curved finger plates with thicker foam padding.
I'm very surprised one of them has had a finger crushing injury yet. I hope they don't, but it seems inevitable.

Yep, pretty much that. I should have kept my wits about me. Its easy to take new guys for granted until they catch you napping.

Finger Gauntlet blocking

In the melee at Estrella I was moving foreward and a guy with a glave took a swing at me. I missed getting it on the hilt and took it right on the second finger. The blow was so hard the hilt of my sword snapped in my hand.
Fingers ok though!

Whose gauntlets did you use? That sounds like a ringing endorsement of their work.

I have a custom pair by Ken Zicker. It was one of the last things he did before going out of buisness. I love them.
