Not quite sure what you mean by that.

See if he would've typed that a bit faster he would've made it be more emphatic. Plus the only reason that keystroke landed was because the other keys were adjusting their springs. Next time you should try the cross-over stroke, that way the other key won't see it coming...

Let's just say I spend a lot of time on the side of the lists listening to both other fighters watching and spectators watching.

You know, yesterday at Caid Crown, after I was out and watching the later rounds, I had much the same thought. Right behind me was a guy I'm quite sure I have never seen in armour trying to "explain" the action to his girlfriend...it was all I could do not to turn around and smack him.

You should have offered to help him demonstrate, if he wanted to armour up... :)

They always make me smile. I may not be the hottest stick in the known world (far from it) - but at least my butt's out there.

I always seem to run into them at parties. Favorite topics are "the correct way to throw this absolutely unbeatable shot", "the time I killed 7 Tuchux by my own hand", and "I could have been a Knight but turned them down because..."

Better than that are the responses you get to "Sounds awesome. I'd really like to learn from you - would you meet me in the field tomorrow?"

Ruined my shoulder killing people - can't because the entire Tuchux are hunting me - the King is too offended by me - a vengeful person stole my armour because I'm too bad ass and they couldn't beat me any other way...

Kinda like when people armchair quarterback cops? I have always liked watching some guys "explain" to their girlfriend/wives etc. what a blacksmith is doing at his forge. Sheep always like to sound tough...to the other sheep. It makes me smile. Richard.

The SCA equivalent of mall ninjas...

My ex- had no tolerance for such, and would call them out abd/or mock them.

Good times, good times... :D

Its funniest when they're being mocked and don't realize it.

I don't have a problem with someone trying to explain what's going on to a neophyte, if they're simply explaining the rules as they know them. Such that if they don't fight, but frequently watch fighting and are explaining to their girlfriend who may be asking what's going on what they're seeing based on what they know. That's no different than some guy in the stands at a ballgame doing the same with his girlfriend. Oh sure it may be inadvertently hilarious when they are completely wrong, but its too small in the greater scheme of things.

Its a little different when someone's going to either a fighter and they've no clue but are attempting to speak from knowledge or talking about oh he should have done this, or thrown that. That's often funny though. Just like all the folk who've told me in the past they could have played football in college or pro, but they got hurt, didn't have a school team to play for etc.

I don't mind the gallery. I don't mind people talking about fighting. I do mind people calling blows for people 50 feet away actually doing the fighting.

Lame. That is all.

Always has been always will be unfortunately. That's just life.

No different than, what is the umpire blind? That was a strike/he was safe/he was out.

Or holding what do you mean holding.

All said while either forty rows back in the stands or while watching it live on tv (without replay).

I'm being a total armchair fighter these days. :(
The cool thing is I'm watching my guys really take off and excel. Even though I'm gimped they still pay attention and show respect. We went to the roaring wastes workout today and fought some damn fine fighters. I thought my guys held up and aquitted themselves well.

Jeez, bra', whaddaya mean?

Don't you know it's not important to do as I do, but to do a I *say* (or more importantly, to do as I *tell* you to do) -- not because of the personal respect I've earned from you, but from my position or just because I *deserve* it!?

Whaddaya want? Leadership by example? That is just *so* passé, Dude! Get with the New Knowne Worlde Order, man!

Perhaps biased as one who's gimpage (extremely acute lateral epicondylitis) and circumstances have me in a similar circumstance training our newcomers more than engaging in practice -- I'm not sure that I necessarily agree that training is the same as armchairing (and I still fight, after all). Especially if you are of the school that believes that training is not simply getting into armour and hitting each other (though I do *completely* understand the feeling of being more on the sidelines).

Unless someone is really asking for advice, I don't tend to give it out unsolicited.

But I do like saying things to other spectators like "See, his first mistake was getting hit in the head. What he SHOULD have done was hit the OTHER guy in the head, it would have gone much better for him that way." Just as when I watch football, I'll say things like "Aha, see, the problem on that last play was that the quarterback didn't hit the receiver. That was not the best play to call," or soccer "Hm, see, the goalkeeper should have stopped the ball. That would have been a better move than letting it through." You know, sort of John Madden-esque.

I think I got mis-understood.

What I was meaning to say is I am at a loss listening to people on the sides of the lists and such bad mouth fighters on the field for blows that they thought looked good.

I am one of the people who on the sidelines with my buds watch other fighters and both point out the mistakes they made, and what they could have done better and such to improve.
What I don't want to do and find distasteful is when I hear "man, that was good" from someone 50 feet away, not in armor, and trying to hold a conversation while watching it without any idea about the actual blow, or how it landed, how it felt and what minute things transpired in the seconds of the exchange.
What I find even worse is when it is then broadcast to others too, and made into a kind of soap opera moment.

As someone who spends most of thier time at the lists, I am often in awe at what is said and such by those watching.

I call people on it and pick fights with such assholes on the sidelines. It adds a certain amount of stress to my day, but it gives me something to do while I am waiting to fight.

Don't happen that much in Atlantia as far as I've seen, and when it does -- I know I do my best to courteously suggest that folks might not want to question others' honor, as they are not in the armour and are not aware of the very significant complexities that often occur in the giving and receiving of blows.

Nothing at all harsh or demeaning, just a reminder to those who should know better, or perhaps a first lesson to those who were never taught that ours is a game in which the honorable man in the armour calls the blows. And yes, your opponent is always honorable unless and until they dramatically demonstrate otherwise. 'Least wise, that's how I see it.

Personally, I don't think you should question a person's honor unless you are willing to challenge them on the field.

Perhaps that's just me, though.

Ok,

I got one of these at my fighter practice. Young kid about 19. I helped him get authorized last GWW in October. I haven't seen him in armor since. What's sad is if he would just shut up put on armor and come out and fight he could be pretty good some day. He hits like a ton of bricks and has decent technique. The problem is he just doesn't seem to care, mocking doesn't work and he doesn't seem to get the point that he doesn't have a clue about what he is talking about. He authorized against the prince and went around for a week saying how great he was and that he beat the prince. Irks me to no end. Wish I could find a way to shut him up and teach him, but I am at the point where I have no more patience left. Anyone reformed one of these young armchair warriors and have some pointers? God knows I am not the greatest fighter, far from it but it is real hard to teach my other newbies when he always has input. (most of it BS)

Offer him a nice frosty can of STFU. If you are teaching he should be silent. Tell him so, straight to his face. Some people don't understand they are being mocked, so you have to be real clear with them that they are lame.

Quite possibly he is afraid to fight.

Tell him to Put up or Shut up.

On second thought

Just tell him to go get in his armor. Dont ask, dont request

Just say. "Go get your armor on. I got some new stuff i want to show you."

a. Beat the crap out of him.
b. If you can't do it, find somebody that can.
c. Remind him, as you stand over him, that there's always somebody better than you.

Regards

But the lady he wants to impress doesn't go to Tuesday night practices!
(I'm Proxus' wife and I know of who he speaks, if he ever gives me my legs back, *i'll* get in armor and whap the guy. And take great pleasure in it.)

Wait, the guy is in loaner armour?

There is your way in. Just walk up to him and say "I need my legs back. It is obvious that you are not using them, so I would like to loan them to someone who will use them."

If he makes noise about using them then put stipulations on it. "Fine, if you are going to use them, then you better be IN them and practicing everytime you are here. If you do not intend to practice in them and use them, then give them back".

If he starts practicing, the beatings will straighten him out. If he disappears then you have gotten rid of the "mouth" problem. :D

I don't know if the guy is in loaner, Proxus would know.. I apparently had a pronoun failure, the person who has my legs is actually Proxus :)

So, he's not putting on armour, just telling others how they should do things ? I get the impression you will be trying to teach something and he'll push in to offer his views and confuse the student ?

Honestly, the latter kind of problem can occur with fighters who seriously know their stuff. Sometimes we have a hard time keeping quiet and just letting the one instructor have his say

But, if you've got a new fighter who isn't actively practicing/fighting but is butting in with his opinions and who isn't taking "Please, just let me teach without confusing people" as a clue to stop interfering, then there's a point where the best answer is to have someone call him out. someone who can pwn him... big time. If he steps up for the whupping, he may get a dose of humble pie and an improved attitude. If he doesn't, it will go a long way toward both showing him up and shutting him up in the minds of the other new fighters at the practice.

I've written a few of those reality checks in my time

Thank you all for the heads up. I have been waiting to lay out a can o'whoop ass on him for a few practices, but he won't bring his gear.

(/shrug) I guess since curteousy hasn't worked I will take Audax, and those who follows advise to give him the "put up or shut up routine."

And oh DEAR......I'll get with Sir Gareth and see about making those cuisses ASAP so you can come back to fight again.

(funny I ask for advice to call him out and get called out myself)

Irony is awesome!! LOL
seriously laughing at myself now!
