too precious to use on the field IMO.

I am of the opposite opinion. To me, it begs to be used. Such displays raise the bar and inspire others to aim for the same mark.

+Tasha. The field is where our precious things need to be displayed.
Sir Vitus could have easily painted that device on a flimsy piece of plywood or aluminum. It's the functionality of the art that makes it so beautiful.

Vitus, thou suckest.
Someday I hope to be worthy of one of your shields.

Everyone is worthy of my shields.
Make no mistake, I can't draw! I am really good at simple charges but I have sneaky-cheaty methods.
The painting you see here is based on an underdrawing (just like a medieval panel) that was done by a pal of my squire Eldrid/Eldric/Edward/Eddie/Ed. The guy's name is Tony and he is a super-freak...he almost went to work for Disney.
If I can't do your device myself, I pay Tony a few bucks and he draws it on the shield blank...then I just go over all the lines and fill in the colors etc. This is why complicated devices cost extra...I have to pay Tony to do the drawing. He's like a goddamn Xerox enlagement machine.
My squire Eddie is the guy who makes those crazy diamond-section rattan swords. He's becoming the best rattan smith alive.

Looking at my shield i feel bad now. All I have on it is my Baronial device...
I think I need to have MY device on it now... Also I one day too hope to be worthy of bearing one of those shields.

Well, unless you're the baron, Hell YES you need your device on it.
Say, Vitus -- do you rig the shield as well? I'd hate to think about getting one of those wonderful shields and then drilling holes in it to mount straps and a guige.

Yeah, this one is getting a yellow felt backing and custom spiffy strapping.

Don't aim for the shield.... aim for the guy HOLDING the shield, it's too pretty to hit, the guy.. not so much, I'll wager.
BTW nice paint job, art like that almost makes me think of using a shield.

Sir Vitus,
Don’t get too caught up in worrying about sneaky-cheaty methods. All artists cheat in some manner. I have copied, traced, transferred, redrawn, fudged and cheated on every shield I have done. There's no "wrong" or "cheating" the only thing that matters is the final image, not how you’ve gotten there.
Almost forgot. AWESOME WORK!!
Keep raising the bar!

I understand this, I just don't want people to think I have actual visual artistic talent....I do NOT.

I have seen your non SCA artwork and respectfully disagree.

Beautiful! What do you edge them with? I always copy and transfer too, especially with animals!
This morning I found this thread with some period shield examples that definitely look similar to yours:

Vitus's shields don't need edging. He explains the process on his website.

If you want to use one of my shields every week, you should definitely use a leather edging.
If you want to use one of my shields for the occasional special event where you want to make everyone else look lame, don't put any edging on it. Edging always makes shields look inauthentic. I make authentic-looking shields for SCA combat, but they are for special occasions like Crown, the Pas, formal deeds of arms, and the occasional fancy challenge.
If you use one of my shields every week, without using edging, they will be trashed in no time. They are still wooden shields. They are simply wooden shields with a hard candy coating.
The first ones I made used fiberglass resin, which was not strong enough.
