I already posted this after the gladiator videos but...

Anyone interested in gladiator fights at pennsic?

Decent kit, though SCA minimums of course...
Period style shields, smaller swords... trident and net anyone?
More period victory conditions... only blows to "unarmoured" places count....

Even if I can only get one other guy to work with this would be cool...

How would you do - with reasonable safety - combat with a net?

Well, I suppose It would be very much like a fencer using a cloak, and using it to entangle the weapons of an opponent. The build of most helms and gorgets means that there would be very little threat to (very unlikely) strangulation.

Although I don't see a problem between two reasonable combatants, the SCA tends to lean towards the lowest common denominator. I doubt using a net would be allowed.

Sounds a lot to me like combat of the 30, or the tuchuk fundraiser.

Very cool idea but I believe most SCAdians who do Roman era persona seem to lean more toward the Legionaries I’ve only seen one gladiator persona and that was at Pennsic…looked damn good too.

I can pull it off. Bazubands, knee greaves, simple (big rectangle) kidney belt, and I could rig up a gladiator-esque mantled gorget....

...But the problem is, I'm (along with others im sure) a proper gladiator's body type: Muscular and tubby.

Before you start scrounging around for bits, do a quick search on gladiator types and try to emmulate on of those... But either way it will be fun to play!

I dont see a net being an issue at a specialist tourney. Everyone knows what they're getting into. If the nets not weighted I doubt it'd do more then scrape up your skin if it hit an exposed area.

I've never seen the net used like a whip, but stuff like that should be tried out!

You need to look into the different types of Gladiators; murmillo, thracian, etc.

Robin, Im thinkng what you wear would be good. Bring a shortsword and a roundshield and you ARE an equite!

I'll probably have a mermillo kit myself, but might try and rig up some thraex kit... I like the smaller shield...

very cool. i keep a gladius (3" rattan x 24") in the bag along with daggers, and my squire uses a small centergrip round.....

Outstanding idea! I'll throw a net into the pile of weapons at the tuchux tournament!

Paint a net on a sheet with rope sewn around the edges. (we're going to try this at a roman themed event in the fall)

Just use a net. You don't HAVE to pull your victim off his feet, just foul his weapon.
