Gladiator fights at pensic anyone?

I already posted this after the gladiator videos but...

Anyone interested in gladiator fights at pennsic?

Decent kit, though SCA minimums of course...
Period style shields, smaller swords... trident and net anyone?
More period victory conditions... only blows to "unarmoured" places count....

Even if I can only get one other guy to work with this would be cool...

Anyone interested? and yes... I am checking with Sir Balin of the east....

How would you do - with reasonable safety - combat with a net?

Well, I suppose It would be very much like a fencer using a cloak, and using it to entangle the weapons of an opponent. The build of most helms and gorgets means that there would be very little threat to (very unlikely) strangulation.

I for one have no problem fighting against a man with common sense and a pair of safety shears- just in case

Although I don't see a problem between two reasonable combatants, the SCA tends to lean towards the lowest common denominator. I doubt using a net would be allowed.

Sounds a lot to me like combat of the 30, or the tuchuk fundraiser.

Hmmmm... Im wondering if you could do more under the umbrella of an arts and science study than a heavy list activity... Hmmmmm... ;)

Strangulation with the net? I guess possible but not probable.... You could do just about the same with cloth I guess... It would be very intersting to try out.

So, does anyone have approporiate kit and is interested?

Very cool idea but I believe most SCAdians who do Roman era persona seem to lean more toward the Legionaries I’ve only seen one gladiator persona and that was at Pennsic…looked damn good too.

I can pull it off. Bazubands, knee greaves, simple (big rectangle) kidney belt, and I could rig up a gladiator-esque mantled gorget....

...But the problem is, I'm (along with others im sure) a proper gladiator's body type: Muscular and tubby.

We're not going for pretty ;)

I'm thinking the shields and swords are the most important...

Before you start scrounging around for bits, do a quick search on gladiator types and try to emmulate on of those... But either way it will be fun to play!

I dont see a net being an issue at a specialist tourney. Everyone knows what they're getting into. If the nets not weighted I doubt it'd do more then scrape up your skin if it hit an exposed area.

I've never seen the net used like a whip, but stuff like that should be tried out!

This can be a whole bucketload of awsome here!

I have a Roman kit, I could modify and be just right for the arena :D

You need to look into the different types of Gladiators; murmillo, thracian, etc.

If it was realy going to happen I would put something together for it.
I would hate to spend time making something and get there and find out its not going to happen.

By the way. Both royalty and the populace must be advised of this....

Thumbs UP is BAD

Thumbs DOWN is good

It was actually reversed from what most people think:

The Latin phrase pollice verso is used in the context of gladiatorial combat for a hand gesture used by Ancient Roman crowds to pass judgment on a defeated gladiator. However, the type of gesture described by the phrase pollice verso and its meaning is unclear in the historical and literary record.[2]

In modern popular culture, it was assumed that "thumbs down" was the signal that a defeated gladiator should be condemned to death; "thumbs up", that he should be spared, a view popularized by a widely reproduced painting by the 19th-century artist Jean-Léon Gérôme, whose Pollice Verso (usually known in English as "Thumbs Down") depicts a triumphant gladiator looking up into the stands for the verdict of the crowd

As for me? I'll bring a chair and a kylix of light wine, watch you fight and cheer you on. :D

BTW, You may want to do this in Wed. when there are no war point battles being fought...

Adam, rig something up.. We'll do this, even if we just play and see what comes up... Lets look at this as recreational archeology than a bang smash!

Robin, Im thinkng what you wear would be good. Bring a shortsword and a roundshield and you ARE an equite!

I'll probably have a mermillo kit myself, but might try and rig up some thraex kit... I like the smaller shield...

Outstanding idea! I'll throw a net into the pile of weapons at the tuchux tournament! 8)

Paint a net on a sheet with rope sewn around the edges. (we're going to try this at a roman themed event in the fall)

Just use a net. You don't HAVE to pull your victim off his feet, just foul his weapon.
