LF Brass colored Lamellar Plates

Post by Drogo the Clueless »

Looking for metal lamellar plates in a brass color. I know I have seen them being sold at Pennsic and I cannot remember who the vendor was. I need a price quote for individual plates and some contact info if anyone has it.

Thanks,

Calontir Trim is most likely the vendor. He is the only one I know of that regularly advertises them in brass.

as far as I know calontir trim was the only merchant selling plates this last year. http://www.calontirtrim.com/ they are not on the web page but he is very good answering questions.

another option would be

You could also talk to HRM Eikbrandr about the lamellar he sells..

Right material but unfortunately wrong shape.

Maybe I should be more specific in the posts for info. I am thinking of making some forearm protection based on the following effigy:

Was thinking of taking brass lamellar plates and attaching them to a leather backing. Brass scales would work also.

My brass lamellar is from Calontir trim. It was my second or third purchase from him and I have nothing but good things to say about his business practices.

The plates are squared off (with rounded corners) on one end and more round on the other (only slightly more round, still mostly square).

The only problem I had was that the squared end has the center-most holes punched horizontally while the rounded end has them punched vertically. While historical for the piece the plate is based off of it made it a bit of a pain in the but to lace.

When I get home I'll take a good look at them and see if I can get you a sketch.

Here is the plate. The grey outlined area is a raised rib, it cost 10 cent more per plate but I think it is worth it both for looks and structural strength.

If you want to do a really spiff version of that, Chriss Gilman talks about how he made this:

Near the end of the following thread:

I don't think you will get quite the effect you would like from store-bought and he describes making the plates as rather simple.

Good Luck!

Here is the direct link to Calontir Trims Lamellar page:

I have a set of his lamellar and they are great though the brass is not brass colored metal, it's brass and with that comes weight. Worn with chain under it you are turned into a virtual tank. The only draw back to this lamellar is that in SCA combat it does it's job extremely well in war it is possible to not notice shots.

I must also endorse Eikbrandr's lamellar plates. Much lighter in wieght and can be custom colored. I also have a set of his plates in production and have not fought in it yet.

Either way, you will be served well by honorable men.

Having handled Greenshield's brass lamellar vest I can say it is VERY heavy. You will not want all of that brass on your forearms. Another option will be to talk to Jamie at Polar Bear Forge and get something custom done out of a lighter material.

I may be wrong, but I would'nt the knight in the effigy be wearing maile? I've seen maile depicted in that artistic style before,in various medieval art.

Its most maille but look at his fore arms. Near his wrists.
