Well... rattan spears flex more and have characteristics associated with that physics subset... pultruded fiberglass spears don't flex as much, and can be heavier. Duke Icefalcon sells the entire kit, shaft and all the components for the tip. Duke Logan sells wood grain pultruded fiberglass shafts in 2 thicknesses one which is SCA minimum thickness, and another, which is thicker and heavier and pretty dang near indestructible.
SO... to sum up
Rattan- Potentially not as heavy, has more flex.
Normal Pultruded Fiberglass- Looks.. well.. red. Can be heavier, has less flex.
Woodgrain Normal Pultruded Fiberglass- same as above, only cool because it looks like wood.
Woodgrain "Kryptonite" Pultruded Fiberglass- same as above, only heavier and Superman can't break it.
It can be a matter of personal preference, though I am certain that pundits for each school can produce scientific studies complete with graphs, charts, transparencies, power point presentations and 8x10 glossy photographs supporting why their prefered style is superior. (In fact, I'm sure, if we were to have an indepth discussion, there would be those who would claim the rules should never have been changed to allow fiberglass spears, and that Combat Archery sucks)
Some personal observations: I've never seen a rattan spear broken. (could be a baby pigeon, I don't know...) I have had a knight get righteously pissed enough to stop a war because I'd grabbed his fiberglass spear with my hand and he feared I would break it, so if you're the kind of guy who hates getting his toys broken, either go with rattan or Duke Logan's heavy spear.
If you have the time, I'd recomend playing with one or two and see which one you like the best.
Is that what you're needing? Sorry in advance if I misunderstood....

As far as performance- the flex or lack of flex is a real game changer. In my opinion, the lack of flex on fiberglass spears gives them a big advantage when you get drawn into a fencing match with opposing spearmen and makes the weapon better at prying shields open.
On rattan's side, you get to use a head that's a third smaller, which is always nice, and bend that they all develop can make it tougher for the person on the receiving end of a shot to judge its target. I haven't weighed either of my weapons, but I have a feeling the rattan might be lighter too.
I'd recommend going to a war and trying out both types, especially before committing to fiberglass. Unless you can get to a seriously huge practice, I don't think you'll really get a feel for the differences in performance on a line. Alternatively, you can always by a rattan stave and cut it down for other weapons if you don't like it as a spear.

correct! there are no stupid questions, only stupid people.
if you want most dependable then our thicker spear is the only option. that said, the red ones my brother ice sells will hold up well to sca sport combat. if money is an issue then you should probably pick a red one up from ice at a local event as the shipping cost from me would add to the overall cost.
also, be careful if you buy a spear from me as reports are filtering in on random attack by women on those that own an ebonwoulfe woodgrain spear because of their "sexy factor". recently the dread overlord nissan (or, as we call him, kia sorento) was reportedly mauled by a horde or hormone driven asian anime girls while shopping for his new lady gaga shirt at hot topic because of an image that was posted on some fetish website of him with one of our spears. he is said to be recovering well from the physical injuries until the emotional damage can be assessed.

Ebonwoulfe Armory is fully stocked with spears again! For now the only way to order them is to send an email to ebonwoulfearmory@gmail.com with the quantity and your shipping address. We will send a PayPal invoice in response including your shipping cost.
