Some scumbag stole my railroad track piece. Need 2 replace

Post by Nomad »

I need a piece of railroad track or something similar to hammer against. It doesn't need to be very big. I'm in the Tucson, AZ area and I'm not sure where to find it locally, so maybe someone could point me in the right direction there?

Somebody scrounging for metal to recycle.

There was a fellow who may have gotten into Hibernicus' backyard and loaded up a bunch of metal - including two anvils and a chunk of railroad, who may have slipped and hit his head on the barrel of a shotgun...

A good cutting torch and some flate rate boxes make the work go quickly.

Usualy go about 10-15 per foot on Ebay. a bit more if someone has shaped out the horn.

There are, or were, some special laws about recycling railroad track. Apparantly some geniouses decided to rip up some seldom used track and sell it for recycling... note I said seldom and not abandoned. Big accident and I think deaths.

That was back when the train companies were powerful lobbiests with the federal government rather then needing handouts to stay afloat but it wouldn't surprise me if the laws were still on the books.

If you have time and live in a rural area you can often find pieces or discarded track just by (carefully) walking along the lines. That's how I found my first piece. Please note that the cops take a dim view of people walking along the tracks with big chunks of metal.

Nomad; are you going to Estrella? How long do you want? (If you want a 6' piece you will have to pick it up here! Short piece I can probably send to Estrella for pickup at the College of Saint Golias campsite just behind Outlands Royal. I sometimes used to take my change in RR rail chunks at the fleamarket in OH and so probably have a couple of short ones in the shop)

Now for a Friday story: I once had a smithing student who lived over in the OSU college area in Columbus OH. As is common I had loaned him my loaner anvil whilst he was working on getting his own setup . He had managed to acquire a couple of cast iron "farmer" anvils and some other tools but still had not returned mine.

One day I stopped by to visit and found my anvil was out back of his apartment and nobody was home! (not good in a college town!) So I picked it up and took it home. A month or two later his smithing equipment *was* stolen. However it turns out he had renter's insurance with replacement clause---tto quote the adjuster "Anvils? Where the hell do you buy Anvils?"---anyway he presented the adjuster with the Centaur Forge catalog and his cheap nasty cast iron farmers' anvils were replaced with peddinghaus forged steel anvils! To rub it in he asked if I would attest to him having owned the stolen items and to the fact they really did disappear. Which I could do in clear conscience even if I was gritting my teeth that I didn't get such an upgrade.

Ever since then I have taken the liberty of hiding his high dollar anvils whenever possible---in the quench tank, coal bucket, armour bag, etc...

Thomas (I was given sections from a cattle guard so I do have several 6' piece legitimately)

I AM going to Estrella, and I don't need anywhere near 6', I don't own a cutting torch or anything like that to chop it into manageable pieces. The piece I had before was only about a foot long, and I'd picked it up back in Vegas (I think it was found at a recycling yard actually). I could really use something in the same size range or maybe a little longer. I really have no idea why some douche would steal it, but steal it they did. Just let me know what's fair. :-)

As a side note, I'm sending an air rifle for my brother up with someone from the Outlands (my brother is non-SCA and lives near Albuquerque) ..apparently some employees at both UPS and USPS are anti-gun and if something looks like it's gun-like they'll run it over with a forklift or something, happens to a lot of airgunners that I've known. So Estrella seems to be a good place to make exchanges/deliveries like that. :-)

Looks like the missing rail will magically be replaced and have even grown in the meantime.
