I have been lusting after the Sallets made on occasion by Duke Fabian from the west. They are a bit sportized having a bar grill mounted under the visor instead of a bevor but his lines are amazing.
I dont know if he is producing anything any more, but someone out there in archive land might. Dmitry would, I think, if he is still checking in from time to time.

I once had contact information but have lost it I am afraid (I'd be grateful if anyone has a current email address for his grace that they might pass on.)

If it were me, I would look heavily into the Czech armourers. For example Jiří Lucius, Stanislav ProÅ¡ek, Jiří Klepač in no intended order.

They all do beautiful work in that time period and are archivers. They dont cater to the SCA crowd specifically, but I feel they could really nail the look you want.

I would recommend an email to Erick Helmsmidt at Zwiehammer armoury - he has taken a good bit of instruction from Fabian and taken it in a less "sport" and more period direction.

I'm currently looking around for one too. There are lots of makers out there who do them: Armour & Castings, Best Armour, Kovex Ars, Historic Enterprises, Eric Dube, Icefalcon, Steel Mastery, Anshelm Arms, and more.

Prices seem to run from $500-1200 for the mid-range to better ones, and vary greatly if the piece will be welded or raised, and mild or stainless steel. Given that you're not into documentability and more focussed on performance, perhaps stainless is the way to go: the last three suppliers mentioned above work in stainless.

I agree with you about sallets having the ability to look great, or look horrible. There are so many versions out there - both in historical photos and modern renditions ... perhaps if you find a maker you like, then they could make a style you like. Once of the nicest I've seen was made by Eric Dube, for Aaron Schnatterly, who posts here - Eric's site also has a great video of the process: http://www.armuredube.com/armuredube.co ... video.html

My guess is that a tilting visor is the way to go for flexibility and ventilation. As for the 'decorative breath slots' you mentioned, Illusion Armoring does one: http://www.illusionarmoring.com/ Just click on their Helmets section, and go to 'Articulated sallet with punched visor and bevor', which could be a starting point.

A couple of recommendations. I've done business with both Wild Armory (Maxim) and Anton over at Hammer Breaker.

I've had no issues with any of Maxim's helms (owned two), or any of Anton's armour (more coming from him by the end of March for me!)

Maxims work is nice too (and very thrifty if you are on a budget).

If you're looking for cost effectiveness, then by all means, go with some of the Ukrainian armourers.

for good SCA ones, I'd go Eric at Zweihammer. Him and Allan Bauldree are the only ones I am really aware of making a decent SCA sallet IMO. then again, I don't follow the SCA armourers all that much, so I'm sure there is more.

If you're looking for something *very* accurate, and yet still functional, I could give you a big list I'd recommend without going to the "oh shit, there's my life savings gone armourers"

also, I am taking commissions for armour now, and would happily do it for a deal. I could fit it in person, and do it raised, welded,/combination of both. If you like, we can talk on Sat.

what about a "close sallet" like the one in the Met (edit)I know that Mac and Cory both did nice repros of it. it's essentially a sallet, attached to the bevor. Used for jousting, but perhaps it might have a place in SCA too.

Ingrid I think you should do some searching for the TYPE of sallet you want. THEN look for an armourer to do it. There are a TON of different shaped Sallets:

These are just some of the variations on Sallets. Some will work better for SCA fighting than others.

i just got a visored sallet// bevor from bokalo. his website does no justice to his skills. and the guy is a joy to work with. resonable prices, great service.

So ... what are the rules for sallet/bevor combinations in the SCA these days? Does the bevor need to somehow be attached to the sallet in one rigid piece?
