I'll take your word for it without cutting through them. I'm using them anyway; it isn't that big of an issue. I did scratch at them to see if they showed more copper, but they didn't and I did not want to get too aggressive into them. Do you have an explanation for the patchy copper coloration I am seeing? Result from the heating process or flux of some sort perhaps? I did still receive one without the center prong, but I can manage something for it.

I asked guys from the foundry today what was this copper layer on the back of the fittings. They say it is just an exudation (if it is right to call it so) of the copper component of the alloy that happen regularly due to some physical conditions while casting. It happens often but it is usually polished out on the outside and stays on the inside where polishing is not that necessary. It is just a very very thin layer - microns thick or so.SirOlafr wrote:IDo you have an explanation for the patchy copper coloration I am seeing? My guess is that it might be due to different quality of the current brass supply - though it is brass but it may have some different proportions of the components in the alloy. Or some additions.
I am from http://armourandcastings.com/
Thank you for the explanation. It is greatly appreciated.
I happily withdraw my prior statement on the materials.

Out of stock
I bought a helmet and gauntlets from you a few years ago. I have been very happy with them.
I'm considering buying another helmet, but all the armor in this section says "out of stock". I've skimmed the rest of this thread, and realize there are some production delays. However, I'm wondering whether you are still taking orders? If so, what is the increased delay for "out of stock" items?
Regards,
Michael

After the armory has completed all the current orders it will be closed for rearrangement and restaffing. It will take time as you understand. We hope the situation will be more of less clear by summer.Michael R Black wrote:I bought a helmet and gauntlets from you a few years ago. I have been very happy with them.

An UPDATE!
We have introduced a new option to all the cast items on the site. It is - PLATING.
So, if you need to have fittings silvered or gilt - just choose corresponding option on the page of the item you are ordering. Price calculated automatically.
Unfortunately the laws of Ukraine do not allow shipping precious metals out of the country so silver- and gold-plating is a good way out of this tight situation.

UPDATE: Order
I received my order today and I can happily say the quality of work has not changed. Everything is in order and looks better than the pieces pictured on the site.
Other than the poor communication I'm very pleased with the order.
@ Armsandarmor:
I agree with your comment about armorers, but 1: I wasn't ordering armor, I was ordering cast pieces there were said to be in stock. 2: I was told an order shipped and then was told a month later it was shipped again. That was my complaint.

Some new pieces in the range: badges and a couple of pendants.
These badges are possibly the last in the range as now we have 36 of them.
Here are: St.Adrian from Flanders, St.Andrew from Scotland (below), the Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven - a sign of pilgrims to Rome and a fun obscene double-sided pilgrim badge from Holland.

For those who have recently ordered or are going to order from us:
Production is paused for about a week as the most of our team is now away to the annual May festivals.
While the guys are away we are moving to another office so some communication problems are possible as it'll take some time to connect to the Internet at the new place.

And an important note for folk from Canada
At our post office I recently knew that no letter or parcel can be sent to Canada since 15.06.11.
The reason is some strike at the Canadian PS or something of the sort.
We don't know how long it will last.
So for customers from Canada - if you are suddenly going to order from us - mind the situation. Your order will be made but we cannot guarantee its fast delivery.
UPD: THE STRIKE IS OVER. SHIPPING TO CANADA IS POSSIBLE.

Re: ArmourAndCastings update
Hi all!
Here are some updates.
It is a Magyar (Hungarian) belt set found in southern Ukraine. IX century, the time when the Magyars were travelling from beyond the Ural mountains to where they now live - this time was called The claim for Homeland or Acquisition of Homeland. Some groups of them settled in the lands they were passing - this belt set origins from a burial which evidently belongs to such group that was roaming in the south Ukrainian steppes.
See "Belt Sets" section for details: http://armourandcastings.com/index.php? ... t&catId=30

Gold plated variant. This belt set was made of pure silver and was gold plated.
So this variant is the most close to the original.

Re: ArmourAndCastings update
OK, I just had a flashback to my mispent youth: listening to Lord Tracy, and the song "Pirahna"
(This is a song about a fish! And fish are BAD!)
Swimming in the deep blue sea
He's after you, he's after me
He'll eat you up, oh yes he will
Cause he's a bad fish
PIRAHNA
(mindless guitar)
Swimming in the deep blue sea
He's after you, he's after me
He'll eat you up, oh yes he will
Cause he's no chicken of the sea
PIRAHNA
(viking part)
I think I will simply have to add an Angry Fish to my next buckle order....

Re: ArmourAndCastings update
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT !!
Since few people read the news on the homepage of our site I have to repeat it here.Recently we had to increase the term of production to 1 (one) month. It means that an order is fulfilled for about 30 days and then shipped. Ie. - 30 days + 7-20 days for shipping.
This was made because the average number of orders per month has grown this year and we found 14 days not enough to complete all the orders on time.
PLEASE, MIND IT WHEN YOU ARE ORDERING FROM A&C
!But, very often we have not so many orders and they may be ready in less time.
Sometimes items ordered are in stock just now - so they may be shipped within a couple of days.
Average time of delivery to US 10-15 days.
to Europe - 5-14 days, depending on the distance from Ukraine - it means that very likely customers from Czech Republic would receive their order sooner than ones in Britain.
to AU and NZ - 14-21 days.
Tracking is possible for any parcel. Initial tracking is possible through
http://www.ukrposhta.com/www/upost_en.n ... t?openpage
further tracking is through your home PS site. Inquire for tracking numbers via e-mail.
If you need your order specially for an upcoming event, birthday, anniversary and so on - please write about it in comments field of the order page on the site!
Otherwise your order will be completed according to queue.I am from http://armourandcastings.com/

Re: ArmourAndCastings update
Hello, here are some recent medieval updates:
Collar links: the M-link comes from the collar which possibly belonged to Maria Valois who was the spouse of the Duke of Burgundy in the 1st quarter of the 5th c. Whole collar is coming soon.
The B-link is stylized in the above described style on request of a customer. Fittings for a belt with discs similar to this one. England, 15c. From tombstone.
A couple of belt mounts, both from the so called belt of Eric of Pomerania,15c., found in Denmark, of which we already have a buckle and a strapend.
Small medieval pins with acorn head. 14-15cc. More heads coming soon.
A medieval wing-shaped badge.
