I'll be seeing you at ÆWP for at least a sword-length one of these. I'll need a pole, too, to make up my English bill. We'll talk.

Remember to sand or file the edges (the spot where the flat of the cut meets the rounded edge) a bit before you mount it to a basket. One pass with a rasp over each of the four edges does it.

Yep. And the tip as well. Comes nder the heading of "Don't break your toys"

Besides, a little shaping of the tip and you can make it rounded or even a bit pointed before you put a layer of 3/4 foam on it and suddenly it looks a whole lot more like a sword.

Yup- people are starting to find out that putting extra time into SCA weapons is certainly worth it.

Eirik, I cant get to your store front from work, but how large are your polearm/great sword blanks, that are shaved. Granted also interested in the sword blanks, but just curious.

And like Vitus, 1 1/2" dia would be awesome, and would save me a lot of trouble. Heck I have 3 of your oversized sticks still laying around that i wanted to make a new GW and Polearm out of, but dreading the sanding. :)

These start from the 50-55 mm diameter rattan and are planed to just over 1.25" wide, leaving the skin on the edges. There are pics further up in the thread.

1 1/2" shaved sticks would literally make my life WAYYYY easier, but I don't want to give my money to HH Perkins- I want to give it to my pals.

Eirik,

Have you considered sanding them a bit smaller, so around 1.2 or 1.15. That way when you add the tape back on, it will be just over 1.25?

Vitus, are you looking for 1.5" rattan then shaved on the sides, or are you looking for rattan shaved on all sides so it comes to 1.5" diameter?

As we refine things, we may well do some that are just under 1.25". Gotta make sure we have good control on things first.

I know I would be interested, but I would have to buy a 48" and throw away 10" to build a sword (my end-to-end blanks are consistently 38" long). You'ld pick up a bigger area under the "curve" if you offered a 38 (or even 40), rather than a 36. After all, you can always shorten a stick to your liking, whereas adding a couple of inches is a real b!tch ;)... AoC

Or left over with a dagger.

Cool beans. Hopefully that knucklehead Eldrid will start carving your sword blade soon...he is avoiding me.

Possible, but not with a 48" blank -- I'd only have 10" of scrap, and even allowing only 6" for hilt and 1" for guard, that only leaves me with 3" of blade. Somehow, I suspect that wouldn't look like a particularly well-balanced weapon ;)... AoC

You are right, but 6'' is a big hand! My squire brother Miles has one with a 2-3'' blade everyone always wants to use. He named it Gork. He is pretty good with it too!

sadly Gork is lost, i accepted a dagger fight challenge at estrella, and after the fights i was so exhausted i left gork on the field, hopefully he is off somewhere stabbyfying faces making someone proud. but i have a new dagger roughly 10-12 inches named Dork, Son of Gork. i cant wait

Really? most off-the-shelf basket hilts are at least that deep, and hockey gloves are only marginally smaller. Even my wisby gauntlets and milanese mittens wouldn't fit on anything much shorter, and I don't have particularly wide palms. I suppose the hilt doesn't have to go the full length of your grip, but I suspect it would be a whole lot easier to hold onto if it did.

Respectfully... AoC

I might be intersted in one or two about six months from now, if you have them. I'm interested now, but it's not really the smartest purchase right before a deployment.

I can see that. I intend to carry these as a stock item. But I am still building that stock. I've temporarily taken the 72" down until I get more from my cutter guy. And will be taking more 2" sticks out to him for this purpose.

Every year I come back from War, I hear "You need MORE rattan?"

You have an event schedule from now through Pennsic?

Not that I won't be by at Pennsic... as usual.
