What the world needs is 1 1/2" shaved rattan.
Hint hint.

You are not the world, or even the center of it. That would be me. Image

I will, however, check and see what it would run. Might be June before I'd get it though. It'd need to wait for my next restock.

I agree with Vitus.

Then you could make the blanks into a diamond profile - which would produce a cool sword-like profile.

In development. Not with the distal taper like Edric's work, but leaving the skin along the edges.

What would shipping be like on a 72'' to 94566, for one and/or two of those, please.

I'm gonna have to weigh them tonight before I can get accurate shipping quotes. But I'll get back to you on it in this thread.

I know I would be interested, but I would have to buy a 48" and throw away 10" to build a sword (my end-to-end blanks are consistently 38" long). You'ld pick up a bigger area under the "curve" if you offered a 38 (or even 40), rather than a 36. After all, you can always shorten a stick to your liking, whereas adding a couple of inches is a real b!tch ;)... AoC

Agree with this, or even just stick with the 6" incriments for one more and do a 42". How much is the 48" going to run though?

Good, now I don't have to plane down my own sticks anymore.

This type of rattan stick is light, let's you know when you hit flat and flexes just enough so that you can use a rattan sword that feels like a sword. You will have a lighter weapon that lands just like a fishbat- in other words, like more like the real thing.

I've been using them for years now.

Actually, I have a 40" and 2 or 3 - 42" so far, I just hadn't done an inventory until I got home.

No, sorry. I will be at Aethelmarc War Practice, though.

Never having used one of these before, what is the advantage of the flat sided rattan sword?

There are two aspects of difference.

One is aesthetic: You can make a more 'sword-looking' sword. There is an edge, not just a tape mark. So you can make 'prettier' swords.

Also, they are stiffer along the axis of the blade, yet only a little heavier on average than a round stick. They bounce less, flex less and thus act a bit more like the steel we are simulating (still not real close, but a little better). But you will REALLY KNOW when it's flat.

Sidenote: The 36" I weighed earlier this evening came in at 1 lb. 13 oz.

Just ordered one of these....

Any advice on taping or shaping the handle? I usually round my handles a bit but have never used flat sided peice of rattan before.

The main thing is to taper down to your actual grip. Don't do a 90 degree shoulder cut to reduce down to yoru grip size, this causes a major weakness and it will be a LOT more likely to break there. So taper it down starting an inch and a half or so above where the top of your hilt will be. Other than that, shape and tape like your normal sword, you're just removing some more material to get there.

That's great.

Although, cash in hand today, beats cash promised tomorrow. Sell 'em if you've got 'em, in other words.

It's as much a matter of timing shipments of the 2" rattan and getting them to the guy who's cutting them for me. For a major event like AWP, I'm gonna try to be fully stocked. But things happen, so I rarely give an absolute 'yes'. That's just me, though.
