Anyone need armouring tools?
Posted: Thu Jun 09, 2011 5:39 am
by Halberds
I have been down in my back lately and not able to work in the shop.
However: I have not missed any orders.
I think I can make a few tools in the upcoming weeks.
As always... No payment until ready to ship.
If you need something... let me know PM.
I have been working on a
Central Base Armouring Tool Set.
This kit will contain all the basic and specialised armouring tools generally needed.
It is an ongoing work in progress.
Without your support... I would never have developed the dishing doughnut or the off-center planishing ball.
Members and Valued Clients... You have my utmost respect.
Thank you for your support.

If you don't mind my asking, sir, what is a " Central Base Armouring Tool Set"?
Just started a new job (woot!) and when the money/bills situation settles a tad, I'm definitely interested.
Turns out that while I may not be great at this new hobby (yet), I ain't *bad*, either. I enjoy it, and I'm thinkin' it's time to outfit my own workshop.

I really hope your back turns for the better soon :S

I am savings my pennies to get a Newbie Tool Kit from you eventually. I don't think I will have the money or space until the end of the summer though.

I wish I could buy one of everything from you! Your work is really great, and you are an asset to the SCA.
How much for the different finger gauntlet sets? It's the 5 piece, the Big Set and the knuckle plate set right? Could you list what each comes with?
Do you have any on hand? Or, How long would it take you to make a set?
Why are some of the stakes wider than others? Will they all fit into your stake holder?
Thanks!
(edited to rephrase questions after answering some myself by looking at website more closely)

Sadly I haven't had the time to armour as much and your kit you sent me is PERFECT. I don't think you could improve on it.
Now, you can tempt me though....

My web site is just a gallery, it does not have a shopping cart.
Thank you for looking though.
I build tools on an as needed basis, I do not have an in stock page.
The "Central Base Armouring Tool Set" is something I am currently working on.
It centers around a common tool holder and includes the most useful armouring tools.
I will be sure to post a pic when it is finished.
I am also working on a condensed finger gaunt tool kit and holder.

Corey,
I won't know until it is finished.
I am redesigning the tool holder and a few of the tools.
I hope to have it finished up early next week.
Maximus,
PM sent.
This is the set I am currently streamlining to reduce cost.

Stallari,
An elbow cop horizontal raising stake?
I would think a horizontal off center ball stake would work.
How do you hold your tools?

As a proud owner of basically that finger stake setup I want everyone to know that its TOP NOTCH! I have been working on TI figure gauntlets and it has been a lifesaver. The tools are fantastic and the holder is awesome. Nice and compact.
Hal when you get this new tool set ready for offering, let me know. I wants it!
My current tools are totally lacking and I have some guys that need some help with some armor project over the summer so I need to upgrade some stuff in the shop.

In response to your request.
The new and improved and in progress.
(no pics till it's finished)
Central Base Armouring Tool Set
Will consist of:
Universal tool holder.
Planishing ball stake
Tool holder mounted dishing doughnut
Anticlastic Y-Stake
Fluting stake
Rivet stake
Metacarpal stake
Finger lame tools
Round knuckle, thumb and finger tip tools
This tool set will center around the tool holder.
I clamp my tool holder to the corner of the work bench.
You will have to make your own rack to hold all the stakes.
I just toss mine on the shelf under the bench.
I'm attempting to put together the specific tools I use the most... Hal's most proven and tested.
Of course, they will be offered separately as a mix and match.
I really won't have a handle on actual discount kit cost until, I put the first set together.
I add my time card and materials + expendables and overhead after it is built.
Thank you for your interest.
Hal

Do you still sell tools/kits through Pitbull's site? I looked around it, and couldn't find the tool section like he used to have.

Is that mild steel stakes or tool steel?

Sigurd,
I do not have page on Pitbull's site anymore.
I can only do this part time with my injured back.
Corey,
The pyramid, metacarpal, finger lame and fluting stakes have a 4140 tool steel working surface.
The rest are mild steel... and have served me well for many years.
I owe you at least a projected cost.
Central Armouring Tool Set:
Universal tool holder
Ball stake
Tool holder mounted doughnut dish
Y-stake
Fluting stake
Rivet stake
$395.00
The additional finger gauntlet tools:
2- Finger lame tools
2- Knuckle and finger tip dishes
1- Metacarpal stake
$185.00

Hal,
Let me know when this is ready, I want to pre-order / get on the waiting list, etc... Will this will utilize the same holder setup as my finger gaunt kit?
If so then I probably don't need 2 of them... but then again having 2 holders close by isn't a bad thing.
Let me know!

My back has improved to allow me a little shop time.
This what the new 5 piece, streamlined (most useful), finger tool kit looks like now:

New full finger gaunt tool kit with tool holder:

Yes Eyvandr, the 1" sq. shank and 3/8" by 1" shank will work in your holder.
I shall start on your other tools.
It takes me a couple of weeks.
No payment until they are ready to ship.

OK.. the first
Central Base Armouring Tool Set is finally finished.
This piticular kit is the result of years of armouring and tool making.
This is what it looks like:

These are the most used tools in my shop.
Dishing, planishing, flaring and fluting in one compact package.
All the stake tools nest in the universal tool holder.
The hammers are the required basic dishing and planishing.
Hope you like them.

Hey Hal what would it cost for just the heads (no stake attached don't need polishing either) for the knuckle ones round and pyramid and the finger tip and a larger finger tip to be used for thumbs?
I'd either be putting my normal stake on them for my bench or setting them up for my press or setting them up with the male and female attached with a hinge for one handed use.
