KETTLEHELMS UPDATE 8/29 Med/small kettle for sale

Post by Gryffinclaw »

Like title says we have geared up the armory to earn gas money to get our noobs travelling. Our local community has recruited about 25 new fighters this past year and we are working hard to teach them barter skills and getting them into armor by the sweat of thier brows. I oversea every aspect of the construction to teach them MAD skills and to ensure you are 100% satisfied.

My que is open to build TWO 12-14g mild steel kettle helms (12g tops, 14g sides). Each helm will have a reinforced rim and bar grill face. If desired I will predrill aventail attachment holes under the rim during construction as it is very difficult to do after the helmet is assembled. The final helm will be smooth sanded to a satin finish. I will gladly polish them or oil blacken them for additional cost.

Cost: $300.00 dollars, polishing or blackened (which comes out a dark blue shade) for additional $25.00. Buyer pays shipping of $25.00

Thank you for looking

Here are examples of the kettlehelms I have made and we use as loaner helms for the Companye De Grieffenclau:

Sorry man I wish I did. Actually these kettles I am building right now are even nicer than those. My camera sucks and took those grainy pics. I will try to borrow a nice camera and post some better ones. I will post more detailed photos as I finish these 2 helms in the next couple weeks.

sure thing

here are the pics for Pollard's helm. I have made a few minor mods to the pattern to make it more asthetically pleasing but this is the basic helm design. I am trying to keep costs down and keep it simple for the guys learning to make these so I will not be offering custom work other than polish and finish.

here is a few more pics. Remember it is several of the new fighters who are doing the grunt work to make these. I am doing the welding and coaching. This helm is paying for the gas for them to attend Panhandle Skirmishes next month.

thanks for looking

Thanks Bjarki for the nice compliment. If our local groups are to survive and grow they must be willing to travel some and bring home what they learn. This is our best solution so far and ties in with our massive carpooling efforts.

I make the kettle helms but I get the new guys to help grind, sand and polish the items as part of thier training. Most of the helms I make go to local fighters who show a willingness to work hard and sweat for a nice kit.

Sir Thorfin TY for the nice comments and the great fight time.

Here are photos of 2 of my used loaner helm kettles that I am selling off. I have kept others. This first one is a small kettle with rivitted mail aventail. Stainless and built from salvaged helm parts I took in trade. Lets say REPURPOSED. It will fit a small head less than 22 inches and was originally made for a small lady archer. It is 14g stainless with reinforcement along the edge of the brim. I am asking $250.00 for the helm and $50.00 for the aventail as well.

The other kettle for sale will fit up to 24.5 inch head. It is a large stainless kettle with butted mail aventail of galvy rings. This helm also has a reinforced brim. It is 12g top and 14g neck and brim. I am asking $250.00 for the helm and another $50.00 if you want the aventail. Buyer pays shipping for these helms.

I prefer cash for the travel fund but will consider trade.

Re: KETTLEHELMS UPDATE 8/29 Med/small kettle for sale

Post by Cian of Storvik »

I received the kettle helm from Gryffinclaw (Troy) almost a week ago, but had not had time to put my thoughts together on it. I'm very happy with the purchase. I wasn't gouged on shipping, and the fact that the helm is stainless and a good shape and size for medium heads makes it worth the money as an admittedly munitions helm. $250 for a stainless anything is pretty good.
It's definately all stainless except for the grill which, btw, is removable.
The only issues are that there is much weld spatter everywhere underneath that could have been cleaned-up with a bit of effort with a grinder or fiber wheel. And the welds themselves are very lumpy. I've seen much worse, and stainless sheet isn't the easiest thing to weld, so it's not a large negative. For a munitions helm it's fine. If I were paying $800 for a WMA or Icefalcon stainless helm, then this would be an issue.
More importantly everything is pretty even. No warp or tilt to the brim. No waves or gauges on the ridge line. And the execution of the bars on the removable grill were well done. The way the grill mounts seems like an afterthought, but since this is one of Troy's original starter pieces, I'm sure this feature will be better developed on subsequent pieces. The roundness of the brim is a bit irregular but I think this can be reduced a bit.
The rough finish and the weld issues are inconsequential for this piece. That's not to say it is equitable to a finished WMA or Icefalcon kettle as it is, but definately a great deal for one third the price of others.
If you're looking for a kettle helm and Troy is taking commissions, I doubt you will be dissatisfied in ordering from him, as I believe they will only improve as time goes on.
