There's a gentleman in Indy that makes them specifically for use as shields. They end up about 29" in diameter, with a deep spun dish to them. His name is:
Master Jamie Blackrose (mka, Joseph G. Paul)
He's one of the people who run By My Hand. Give me a day or so...I'll check to see if he's got any on hand. E-mail me, and I'll get him in touch with you.
T. Bob- That would be awesome. I don't need it for SCA though, just boffer fighting this summer, so it can be lighter weight. I don't really need it until August, so in stock is not a big problem. Please put me in touch with this guy, i'd much appreciate it

I'm running an experiment in Middle Kingdom Rapier using larger than 20" diameter shields (in other words, Italian rotellas) so a 29" dia light deeply dished round shield would be perfect.
Please let me know about the pricing and availability of said round shields! Thanks!

Brodir, when i used to boffer fight i used a plastic snow saucer, it helped to extend the life of the boffers but is still plenty strong for fighting, ind it was very cheap, you can even put 2 together for a stiffer shield
Brodir - If you want to try the plastic slead like WMA suggests, try Target if you have them in your area (they are like walmart) They did have 29" rounds that seemed to be out of a thicker plastic with a series of ridges that looked like they would strengthen the dish.
WMA - What Padded Weapons Group did you fight with? Also did you get my E-mail about a Basket Hilt like the one you made for Hobbs?
I was planning on doing 2 plastic saucers sheathed in leather, but I can't find round plastic sleds at any of the stores in my hometown. I'm hoping the Aluminum thing works out...
I sent an e-mail to Master Jamie just a few minutes ago, with courtesy copies to all of those who expressed an interest. This way, he can contact you at his (and your leisure. I'm not sure if he has any in stock, but he does lots of them for Pennsic, and always sells out of them well before the end of war.
Perhaps enough of you could prevail upon him to start another run of them?

My husband made plastic one for use with a pike at Estrella. He covered the edge with hose laced over with sinue, roughed up the top and inside with a rough sander and then glued canvas over both the outside and the inside. After a few coats of paint, it didn't look too bad at all.
Spoke to Master Jamie on the phone yesterday. The shields are at the metal fabricators being spun---so if you're interested, you will want to contact him on that. He goes by the Archive handle of Captain Jamie Blackrose (or something similar), but he's not posted here for a while.

Master Jamie asked me to find out how much it would be to get a banner on the Armour Archive. His joint venture, By My Hand is about to go on the Internet. The e-mail address will be www.bymyhanddesigns.com
