approx. $200 Bascinet??

Post by Otto »

I am getting together armour to take up SCA heavy fighting again this spring... and it appears that most of my kit is of the "transitional" time period.
leather arms n legs with 5 pc articulations
likely some sort of churburg type body armour
and I want steel mitten gauntlets etc...

but I have a nice early period spangenhelm that doesn't fit in... I'm pretty sure I can auction it for around $200 which I could then use to purchase another helm... preferably a heavy guage bascinet (mild or stainless)

Does anyone have recommendations of armouries that might have something like that?? Preferably "on hand"... not the 6 month wait thing... don't want that.

Thanks for any help
(and it's OK to point out inconsistencies in my kit...... I'm FAR from perfect)

WMA,

You've got slots open? I've always thought your bascinet w. globose klappvisor was just about the most spiff helm in the world. Image

P.S. If you do have slots open, of course Otto has dibbs on them...he was first to ask. I'd hate to look like I was trying to bump him. His needs are more immediate than mine.

But if he's not interested, this would be a great way to get another bargrill off the field, eh? Image

Illusion has them in stock occasionally for right around a hundred bux. You gotta check his "in stock" link frequently though.

Ok inconsistancies. 15th century 5 piece articulations.

Leather with steel cops should be just a one piece cop and either laced into place or just attached directly to the upper and lower leather pieces.

This will actually give you better articulation in most cases.

What would be really cool would be a close fitting open faced bascinet with no grille. And then a sugarloaf or barrel (but more likely sugar loaf) worn overtop.

Bascinet with a visor if you're goin later then about 1355 is just fine.

Yes eventually I'll be using a sugarloaf with a bascinet underneath.

Or you could just go with a sugarloaf. Something you're definitly capable of making yourself.

A plain ol bascinet should be pretty cheap too.

Oh the churbourg #13 was an exception as an armour type. More common was the plain old globosse cuirass.

But a COP would be a lot cooler with the leather stuff. As sexy as the steel is. I've got a globosse cuirass that I useta wear with my splinted stuff. I like the CoP a lot better. It just seems to fit in better.

COP's were WAY more common during this time period than full plate breast plates. I've seen several of the type GAA armoury makes poking out from under surcotes on effigies and illuminations from this time period. Being many small plates rather than one big one you can move a little easier too. Consider the COP option!! I have't been smacked in one yet but a couple of folks have said they absorb a blow better than full plate as well.

Nope you feel the hits more in a cop then in a globosse cuirass. Trust me I did the pick the biggest guy with a stick at fighter practice. Hold my arms up in the air and tell him to wack me all over the place starting soft and getting harder.

I have had a very similar experience... but I was trying to block, duck and generally get the hell out of the area at the time.. with mixed results
