Need some work done on a helmet

Post by sarnac »

I have a bascinet that I made and I am having real troubles with it.
I put a fixed bargrill on it and it looks UGLY!!!
I would like somone to make a set of removable visors for it.
One bargrill and one globose klapvisor.
However I dont want to spend more than the helm is worth.
Price is definitely an issue.
Can anyone do this cheaply??

What are your thoughts on cheap?
We probably differ.
How quick do you want it done by.

Well.....

considering that I have seen these helmet for sale for 200 to 250 dollars with a hinged bar grill,

I would think that the bargrill was the smaller part of the work.
However the Klapvisor would take more to fit.
I would like to stay around 100 dollars but if that is unrealistic please say so and I will oinly have one or the other made.

Timeline is I would like it by Pennsic but once again, if that is not realistic I will be flexible

Since nobody else is jumping in...

IMHO, $100 is very low for what you're asking. Part of my reason for saying that is that I hate doing barwork (so I'm not unbiased) but doing the Klapvisier well is a fancy bit of metalworking that is not fast or easy. I'd allow a full day to get it done from start to finish - including fitting it to the helm. $100 for that alone isn't really enough to cover time, materials, overhead, and consumables (oxygen, acetylene/propane, abrasives, etc.) - OTOH, I might be wrong about how long it takes, in which case it would be a marginally profitable job (or a seriously unprofitable one). Can you tell that I've been influenced by Frederick's dissertation on running a profitable armoury? :)

I would be happy to do the Klapvisier for you for $100, and I can get it done before Pennsic. I like doing them - shoot, I like everything about my job except barwork - so the money's not as big a deal as it probably should be. If money were of primary importance to most professional armourers...well, we'd be doing something else, wouldn't we? :)

None of the above is meant to be an insult or attack on you, BTW. Just thinking out loud about my business more than anything else, and figured that it might engender some interesting discussion - wrong board for that, but there you are.

I could do the removable bar grill easy enough, but wouldnt care to attempt the clap visor at my current skill level. Be a while before I could start it though. And of course the helm would have to be here.

HW-
NO insult taken. I didnt feel like you were attacking me at all. Considering I have given away all my projects for the simple reason that I dont feel I am good enough to start charging people money for my work, I dont have any idea how to set a price for a certain piece of work.
If you think the Klapvisor alone is worth 100 dollars, then I bow to your experience in these matters. So I guess then the bar grill to go with it would be.... what.... half that???
so 150 total for both???
Is that reasonable? Or am I just shooting blanks again??
This is for my reference only. I decided last night to just have the Klapvisor made and forgoe the Bargrill for now. Maybe in a few months.....

Can you email me privately at sarnac2000@netscape.net to discuss this further??
