Hate to do it, but if I don't sell my heavy kit I'll get weak and go fight in it, not something I should do now.

I'm with Bascot. Keep your hat!
Why not just sell the rest of your kit? Your helmet is like the centerpiece of your entire kit, and even without the rest of your armour, your helmet means a lot. Besides, its got your crest and everything on it...
Not trying to razz you or pee in your corn flakes. Just giving my (always unsolicited) opinion.

Sell it so you can get a quality fencing sword. Don't keep a toy you can't play with anymore. I used to have a 1927 Gibson arch-top guitar but playing it made my shoulder hurt so much I considered giving up fighting. I loved that guitar but why keep it if I can't play it?
Now somebody else has it, and they are enjoying it- I took the money and had fun at Pennsic.
Sell it. Get new stuff.

I've got an idea. It's definitely not my place to say, (though that's never stopped me before!), but why not make him King of Arms and put him in charge of the pas' de armes? (Same as before, but a new spiffy title, and he gets to wear his armour.)

You can't fight in it if the inside is filled with epoxy.

Tempting, tempting, tempting.
I just bought another great helm, I have a temporary amount on cash, and dang that is a good looking hat, it would look good with my 14th century kit that I am finishing up. But I hate to take your hat away, I DID just buy a new helm(although I might end up selling it or using it as a loaner because it is rather large), and my lady would probably kill me.
On the other hand, the big helm is for her and I am afraid it may be too large, and I DO have the money right now. Maybe if it doesn't get up too high, I may try to give it a good home.
Edit::If it were just selling outright $95, I would snatch it up fastern' a coon wit a hound on his butt.

Too late, someone already bid, and it wasn't me. I wasn't about to be the one to start bidding. I am actually trying to finish up a helm like this, and was planning on making a crest for it. I really like the way that one looks, you mind if I base mine off of your's Bob? This would be perfect for me if only the colors were red and gold.
I sure hope whoever gets this doesn't put it on a wall beside their "barbarian" sword. Even though I hate to see a guy loose a beautiful hat like that, I would also hate to see it just laying around getting rusty. I've always heard that saying "Wear out don't rust out." Maybe that is why he is selling it, a helm like that deserves to be on the field and not on a wall.

Oh, gee thanks guys for making it easier for me. Be sure not to bid on it, too, so I won't have enough money to fence either.
Chef, after having nearly every thing you own go up in flames, you learn just how unimportant mementos really are. I'd rather see it on the field making someone else look like a medieval knight instead of a road warrior.

Agreed Bob. As much as it troubles me to see you doing this I know the reason and I applaud how you have decided to handle the problem. Many would give up the game and go onto to other things. You simply reevaluated your options and chosen the next best thing. In doing so you opted to make sure your tools get put to use by someone else instead of gather dust and make sure your able to affoard the new tools you need. That would be tough for me to do but its the best thing.
As for you that said "don't bid on it.." I understand where you are comming from but your thoughts are misplaced. This is a decision for Bob to make and he has done so with more than a small amount of thought I'm sure. Your attempts at compasion in reality will hurt his chances at continuing to play in the same game we all love, even if it means the feathers will be on a hat instead of a helm.
Its a great helm (pardon the pun) it needs to be given a good home. I thought more than once about buying it but its just not possible at this time for me. I do hope the next owner brings honor to the field in the same way its past owner has.
Best of luck with the sales Bob.

Bob,
If I bid on it, could you hold the helm until we get sufficant funds?
Part of the reason for my interest in biding is this:
People almost ALWAYS have no bids for days...and then there is a quick bit of bidding at the end.
If I bid now (with really non-existant funds right now), it will bring up your eventual price.
Now, if I do end up outbiding everyone, I am honor-bound to buy the item (obviously!!). What I am asking Bob, is that if I do win, could you hold onto the helm for a bit and I'll pay you in installments (and you deliver the helm ONLY when I've paid it all off)?
If you are of small stature, I could throw in a never used, but 1st try, fencing jacket (in blue, made of trigger).
Its a rather nice helm and I will miss seeing it on your head. But, if you wish to give it up, I would like it if you got a good price for it. Moving the bidding along would do that.
So, if you agree to installments (say $20/month), can I bid?

American Fencing Supply has starter sets for $133. Have you considered them? When I was going to be a fencer instead of a heavy fighter I considered them strongly...and then my wife wanted to heavy fight and make her armour....and now I'm addicted.

Unfortunately, those are modern sets. For not much more you can get a Triplette starting kit that at least pretends to be period.
They start at $162 for a Frace Lames foil (stay away from France Lames!!! Their proudcts (these days at least) are utter crap, and some are banned in various kingdoms). A better "absolute cheapest" set is the one with the TCA foil ($165) and better yet you can get one with an epee blade for $185 (again, stay away from Frace Lames)
The link is: http://www.triplette.com/Theatrical%20Fencing/sca%20starter%20sets.htm
One of these kits is how nearly every SCA fencer I know (myself included) started. They are a good deal. Unfortunately they give you a modern-hilted weapon. Replace that as soon as you can.
Or, if you feel your (or a friend's) sewing skills are up to it, you can make your own fencing armor (4 layer of trigger or some leather), thus needing to buy only mask, weapon, and glove.
You absolutely cannot scrimp on the mask. Buy a good 3-weapon mask. Triplette's model 1999 is good (I've been using the older model for 5 years now), as is Prieur and Dynaflow. In general, the masks that are under $65 or so aren't sufficient
Any thin leather gloves with a 3-4" cuff will do, although if you get ones for modern fencing they will have some pading (I find that unnecessary).
As for weapon, please stay away from modern epee and foil hilts. They are blatantly non-period and force you into a non-period grip. One of my hilts if from Popinjay (very nice), one was assembled from a modern epee guard and some parts from MAS Weapons (who are gone now, I think) and is being discarded, and my new one is a Triplette hilt.
From Triplette's line, I would reccomend R8 (it's what I'm getting). The R6 is also nice, but not SCA legal (for epee), and the R9, while nice, may not be legal either (consult your local marshal). Stay away from the rest (especially the R7).
