What am I looking for?

Post by kaolin »

We have a globose brestplate with no back, i.e. no kidney protection, in our loaner gear. Of course it is unusable for SCA heavy list as is. I need to remedy this but I have no idea what I need to make, buy, or otherwise procure to make this breastplate usable. Would one of you fine experts provide you knowledge? Pretty please with figgy pudding on top?

Assuming you can't put a weightlifter belt on the person under the globose to satisfy kidney requirements....

Go here http://armourarchive.org/patterns/

cut a backplate pattern out of heavy 12 oz leather and add strap loops.

Cut out some sturdy leather "back-flaps". Then either reinforce with one more layer of the sturdy leather, or reinforce with some metal squares. Done.

Yup pretty much what they've all said. Couple different ways to meet SCA min. If I'm wearing my period linen arming cotte, I have a Thorvaldr low profile kidney belt to be worn under my mail. If I'm going for more 'sport/melee' I wear the zoombang shirt with the globose to protect against thrusts which zoombang doesn't cover. If I know Nissan or Random are anywhere on the field, I wear the zoombang, with the low profile kidney and mail over all of it!

P.S. my previous metal churburg had a pair of sole weight leather flaps added as the normal plates were sometimes questioned by marshals. As long as the leather is cut in the same pattern as the metal plates, tooled a little bit and oil darkened they blended right in.
