I did see the helm I want...Actually, I have to buy two, on for my man, at Ursulmas, it was a Hussars Helm modified for Heavy Combat, I even got pictures, smart thing that I am, but...gah! Look at me, rambling. Sorry.

I should add, if anyone has some cast off armor that would fit a 5"5 135lb girl, let me know?

Yay! As the former Herald of Shittemwoode (don't ask when...), it's great to see the old home still going strong!

And for those wondering, Shittemwoode was founded by Viscount Edward "Fast Eddie" Ziffran of Gendy, and he named it after the wood the Arc was built of... because he wanted to call his people the Shittites.

I reccomend you start with the used bascinet offered, as they offer good protection and glancing surfaces and a lighter weight. This will help when getting used to wearing a multi-pound hat. Also, bascinets always have a good secondary market, so when you're ready to move to your Hussar kit, you can likely sell it, even in it's smallness, relatively easily.

Cheers,

Malina,

I have some extra female armor from a kit I bought for my fiancee. It's PVC chest and body protection. From what you've posted, it sounds like it might be up your alley. PM me if you're interested.

I think that you should go as cheap as possible to start with, just until you figure out whether or not you truly like getting pounded on.

It sucks that you don't have access to anything that will at least get you through a few practices.

Please do yourself a favor and take advantage of some of the cheap trades/deals that people have offered you here. It would be a shame to lay down some serious cash for good custom stuff, to later find out that it really is not your cup of tea.

As long as you keep true to the above, you will do just fine.

Good Luck,

If you are not familiar with helmet styles, this site may be useful-

I am also working on something that may be of more use in deciding a style, or for describing general styles of helmets.

I have no armor yet! Sadly! I was at Ursulma's last weekend, and decided to heavy fight. I'm working from the ground up! So...if I took a pic now, it would be just bare skin and while I'm sure some folks might like that, I got a feeling it is against forum rules to have nude pics of fighters around, no matter how cute they are! :P

That being said, I'm trying to stick around $100-$150 for a starter helm.

While fighting nude is period for some cultures... I wouldnt DARE do it in the SCA. All sorts of interesting bruises, in not so friendly places. On the bright side, no armour bites.....:D

And to the Shire of Shitemwoode, THAT IS AN AWESOME SHIRE NAME!

I am in the Canton of Attillium, and it was named pretty much after Attila the Hun and some other things too.

Your shire name could be worse. Shire of Pisonmeface.

OK, I have worked on getting a number of new fighters on the field over the years, my number 1 recommendation has been ashcraftbaker.com they have the lowest prices and good gear though their customer service (reply time to emails), website and delivery time has made them some enemies.

I always recommend new people consider their stuff, a cop beginner suit starting at $170 but I recommend their mild steel articulating suit: helmet, gorget (neck/throat), 5 piece articulating knees and elbows, a sword basket and shield basket for $220. I also recommend that you talk to him about upgrading the helmet to a lift, nearly every fighter I have recommended this too has done it after fighting in a fixed grill then trying a lift, it make a major difference. They guys there are usually willing to make slight changes like the lift or even switching out the helmet for a different one and still offering a decent deal just be ready to wait for 4-5 weeks to get the armour.

Personal observations/rant:
I would like to note that the knees and elbows are extremely reliable and easy to strap. I would recommend counter bending the ends or adding a lame of leather to keep amour bites away.

Their helms might run a little on the heavy side, but i like that, I get hit in the head a lot, and prefer it since I am a minimalist when it comes to armour (kidney belt and fur) and my head is the most protected thing on my body, the extra weight means I don't feel the impact as much as notice my head moved a little and call the shot good. The first helm I got was one of these, I have had it for over 5 years, and it was a loaner before that, it hasn't needed to be reshaped (no dents that I can see) and it hasn't needed to be re padded and only re-strapped once. Yes the face is basically a football grill but I havent had any issues with visability on the feild.

The best part about these helms is the price. At this cheep $70 for the cheapest $105 for the lift I wear, You can upgrade and not be out too much. I have started collecting helms I want to see and make, I have also started reselling/gifting them away because I wouldn't trade this helm for the world.
