Looking for a gambeson

Post by Dallan of the Loch »

I ordered a haubergon from Kult of Athena but their gambesons are on back order. I was hoping to have one or two so I could be appropriately attired for Gulf Wars. I was wondering who people were recommending or where I could pick up one made from natural fiber. Ideally, a linen or canvas outter layer with a wool or cotton batting.

Ice Falcon sells relatively inexpensive gambesons. They are mostly cotton though (some of the stitching thread is poly, shell and liner and I think the batting are all cotton). The outter shell is pretty tight weave. Not quite canvas though.

Sir Gareth at http://www.gambesons.com.

His gambesons are made out of brush denim outside & whatever lining on the inside. He uses top quality natural cotton batting. These things are tough as nails and built to withstand lots of abuse.

I had one custom made by a fellow AA member. I still haven't gotten around to posting a review and pictures but will do so this weekend. The fellows name here on AA is Jan van Nyenrode. I paid about 230 with shipping to Canada. The gambeson was handmade and is very strong. I suspect it will serve me well for many years.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

If you need it quick, Icefalcon or Therion are your best bets.

Therion is another GDFB distributor, so he should have most of the same stuff as KoA, but he might have what you need in stock if they don't. There are also a number of other US distributors of GDFB.

Icefalcon's are his own, not GDFB, and he always has them in stock.

Revival Clothing has gambesons in linen, although they are more expensive than the cotton gambesons.

Dallan,
I dont have any experience with the Revival, or any other gambeson makers. With the Icefalcon gambesons, the sizing is based on your t-shirt size. For example, I have a 3X for my rather ample exterior. Ice also sells light weight (100% cotton) gambesons. (I noticed you live in Houston....I spent a summer in Waco, damn it was hot!) If you are unsure of what size/weight/color, I imagine he'll have a few at Gulf wars, or you can contact him directly, and he'll bring exactly what you want. I own one of his coifs as well, they are good quality and can be color matched to the gambesons.

Well, to fight in Houston you just need to grow some gills. Heat and humidity are a wonderful combination when you start stacking on armor. That is why I want to go with a light colored, sturdy weave and natural fiber gambeson.

I would also look at Bad Ass Garb http://www.badassgarb.com/. They did a custom gambeson with hand embroired piece on the front and huge appliaque on the back, for $400...but like I said this was custom with lots of options, but it is a full long sleeved Eastern European gambeson.

I don't have the sleeves on in this picture, and I can post more after this week, but it does have 2 arming points on the elbows and shoulders.'

**UPDATE* - I just checked out the site, and they don't have a ton of garb pics there, but they are on Facebook and have tons of pics there. Here is the linky https://www.facebook.com/pages/BadAss-G ... 8169041894.

HammerBreaker just finished an awesome gambeson for me. I don't have any pictures of myself wearing it yet, but here are the ones they sent me before shipping:

I gave them some simple measurements and the fit is awesome. It was very affordable too. Definitely recommend.
