Anyone got a period tent for sale?
Just curious. Might possibly be in the market to buy one if the price is right.

I have a Tentmasters 9 x 9 square marquis with mitered corners that's in great shape. It's a couple of years old but only been used 4-5 times. It's 1-piece, and uses 1 center pole plus 4 perimeter poles. Perfect for one person, or use as a storage or kitchen tent. If you are interested, I'll work out a price.

Aidan,
Depending on what your looking for...you may be able to afford new. Blockaderunner is a civil war sutlery site, but they have Wall and Wedge tents (which are period back to who knows when) and the price is the best I've found. took me 3 day's to get my wall tent.

hope it helps.

Ulrich, thanks! I`ve been pricing out wall tents too. I hope to get one in time for war and the link you gave does have the best price to quality ratio I have seen! I have a lot of stuff to get for war, so I may have to settle with a mundane tent, but at the prices these guys sell I may not.
Thanks!
John
Thanks!

Brodir,
Yea, there website is not the best I've ever seen, but its a small price to pay for the prices, delivery time and service.
now to be completely up front, the did slightly mess up my order (left out 1 out of like 15 articles). but a quick email later, and I had it in three days.
Ulrich
p.s. if any of you are close to their store in Middle Tennessee, a little tidbit of info, their online prices are better than their instore prices.

um the civil war "wall" tent...is the same basic design as the "roman officer's" tent, that makes precident for it deep into period, if you want to use one Aidan, get in touch with Sir Robert Glendon of Auk, and he can quote you the exact era's it was prevelent in. but then I could be wrong, wouldnt be the first time.
and I KNOW the wedge tents can be documented almost any time in period.
I know it sounds like I'm pimping this place, but its just a great deal, and well I like to share great deals.
Ulrich
its a common misconception that all period tents were actually designed for a circus but sold to the french at higher prices.

I wouldn't presume there is a continuity of the wall tent design stretching unbroken from Roman times to the U.S. Civil War!
Aside from Roman tents (which were leather, not canvas) the only other documentation I can remember coming across is an engraving of a circular military camp from the Hussite wars of the latter 1500's. There's a reproduction of the engraving on page 13 of Osprey's The Landsknechts. Amonst the several styles of tents shown, there seems to be what could arguably be called wall tents and some pretty obvious wedge tents.
If you are looking to rationalize a wall tent, you might consider putting a post under Research & Authenticity and see what your fellow Archivers turn up!

Late-Breaking News: Check out this guy's site. It gives some documentation for wall tents for various periods

I do some civil war stuff on occasion with my dad and one thing I must say they have on us that I long for is period encampment. When you go through one of these camps at night and there are NO coleman lanterns, NO propane stoves, and NO nylon tents, you get this feeling. It's called atmosphere.
Granted these tents are out of period. But I would much rather see a camp full of wall tents than a camp full of nylon tents.
Granted I will never see this, which is why I am sure I will eventually move on from the SCA into something with more atmosphere.

Oh man that reminds me I saw some of those on sale in a sportsmans guide catalogue and they were damn cheap if I remember correctly. Check out their web site, they may still be available.
