Fencing accessories

Post by guthrothr »

Hi there.

Does anyone out there sell SCA legal epee fittings that would make a modern weapon look a bit more period?

In hope……

what period?
in general i would suggest Popinjay:
http://www.popinj.com

most of the other period hilt producers make hilts for schlagers as those can use the more common openwork hilts.

American Fencers Supply http://www.amfence.com/index.html has lots to chose from, but their casting is a little rough looking.

Triplette Competition Arms http://www.triplette.com/ has a descent selection and great prices. Their stuff is usually well polished. If you look at them I suggest downloading the PDF catalog because their web site isn't so good.

I own equipment from both and it all stands up to extreme use.

That stuff is nice and well priced. Question is are those SCA legal? From what I remember reading the SCA requires your hands to be covered by the hilt. I have a cup hilt and the one time I fought in the SCA I was required to put a plastic or leather piece behind the hilt to cover the design holes in the it.

Flonzy,
In al of the rules that i am aware of that is a requirement for epees only.

My understanding is that the rule is to prefent the epee blade from going through a hole and then being broken, not to protect the hand.

from the socieity rules:
WEAPONS AND PARRYING DEVICES
3. Equipment that is likely to break a blade or damage other equipment is prohibited. Any equipment that has small rigid openings large enough to admit a rapier tip will not be used against fencing-type blades, as defined in this section (e.g., small holes in bell guards, small openings in cage or swept hilts, any design which has acute angles where a blade could easily be wedged and bent). Knuckle bows ARE DEEMED SAFE for use with fencing-type blades.

I haven't heard of it being applied that stringently before, then again i have no idea what your guard looked like.

Many of Alchem's hilts wouldn't meet this standard.

Gladius, the proprietor of Alchem Inc., is working in a schlager-only kingdom. For epees, no, they're not legal.

Gladius, does excelent work, and I beleieve he has done work with epees before (before the Mid went to Schlager-only) I would still give him a try, he may still have something on hand that will work well for you.
