Rebated Sabers/Sabre

I am considering stepping back into the LH scene here in the States (some of the filth has been washed away it seems) and am considering carrying my current Rus presentation over.

Does anyone know anyone that does the saber blades suited for rebated combat?

Darkwoodarmory.com Scott makes them... If you don't see it on his website give them a call they answer the phone and e-mail. He makes Eastern and Western type sabers. had them out at Pennsic.

Depending on what the regs are icefalcon, darkwood, or Baltimore knife might have what you need.
Baltimore and darkwood will do a lot of custome stuff at a price.
I'm not sure if icefalcon is setup for custome blades.

Don't do it. Wouldn't be prudent.... :D

I don't think there is enough water in MO to wash that away... :D

Its only going to be on a part time basis, maybe one event a year.
I wont ever walk away from my SCA obligations again Russ:)

But I am going to try to wrangle some folks with the same interests so we can do a cohesive high end presentation.
Not so much into the combat anymore, I love doing rebated but my love is (and always has been) full contact full speed SCA combat.

Oh, and thanks to all the suggestions so far!

Halvy, I really wouldn't mind somebody to play with on the LH side, if you want to do up something that'd be somewhat regionally-inclusive. Unfortunately, the CT guys won't accept "random person X's" rebated sabres, and none of the ones I have are from the approved list, so I can't help you directly on that front.

I am looking to pull together folks to do early period 'Rus' warrior impressions.
I really only plan to travel to places like Indiana and Louisiana (and MAYBE Oklahoma) at this point as those are the only two "Viking Age" groups I know of/have worked with in recent times that A) are close enough and B) "get" what LH is all about.

(Note: there may have been more spring up in the 2-3 years I have been out of the loop so the pool may open up unexpectedly...which would be something Id welcome)

Well, your Rus will always need at least one Black-Hat. :)

I might be the only one, but I'm completely lost. Could someone please explain what "LH" is?

As a total sidebar, you might want to check that again -- the new rules for blades are that all Bud K blades, and saber blades for Olympic fencing are unacceptable.

All others have to meet the following criteria:
WEAPONS AND PARRYING DEVICES
Section 2. Blades
A. In order to be acceptable for use in rapier combat, it must meet certain criteria. If a blade does not meet the criteria established below, it may not be used for any form of rapier combat in the Society, unless it is first approved by the Deputy Society Marshal for Rapier Combat and will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If a blade meets the criteria below, it is considered acceptable for use by default unless specifically banned. A list of approved exceptions and banned blades may be found at: http://sca.org/officers/marshal/docs/ra ... etypes.pdf.
i. For light rapier: Foil, epee, double-wide epee, and musketeer blades from established commercial manufacturers are acceptable for use.
ii. For heavy rapier, and cut and thrust rapier:
a. Blades must be made of steel
b. Blades must be no longer than 48" as measured from the tip to the top of the tang (i.e. where the tang and forte meet)
c. Blades must be reasonably flexible. Heavy rapier blades must flex at least 1 inch (25 mm) when tested per the procedures in the Appendix, section 1.B. Dagger blades (those under 18 inches), and cut and thrust blades must flex at least 1/2 inch (12.5 mm). Any blade 18 inches or longer, being used in melee combat, must flex at least 1 inch (25 mm).
B. BLADE FLEXIBILITY TESTING
To determine if a weapon meets the standard of being "reasonably flexible": Hold weapon parallel to the ground, supporting the handle against table or bench if necessary. Hang a 6-ounce weight (170 grams) one inch (25 mm) distance from the tip. If the blade of a dagger (out to 18 inches blade length) flexes at least 1/2 inch (12.5 mm) the blade is reasonably flexible. For a heavy rapier blade (18" or longer), the blade must flex at least 1 inch (25 mm). For use in cut and thrust rapier, the blade must flex at least 1/2 inch (12.5 mm). Any blade 18 inches or longer, being used in melee combat, must flex at least 1 inch (25 mm).

This would be my suggestion as well.

On the original topic: I can't recommend Darkwood enough, ever. :D

Darkwood thirded. SUPERB customer service (small things lost from the package between him and me. He replaced 'em and threw in a set of rapier hanger fittings for my inconvenience). And the quality of the workmanship is lovely. Very nicely balanced.

I've held a darkwood and was impressed, too. Can't afford it, but if I were in the market, I'd go to them.

(Saritor: my blades are too realistic; not springy enough for the flex test.)

yea, Darkwood already had both an eastern style scimitar and a western style saber blade at Pennsic (approved for C&T)... I am sure if you wanted something more like a shashka... just ask Scott or Patrick.

The Darkwood blades are very narrow, though. While they feel great in the hand, they look nothing like real weapons (unless they've changed radically since the one I held a couple years ago when I came up to MO to meet y'all).

Ideally Id be looking for something like this but for UK style rebated combat (and MUCH cheaper:)

It's totally, totally wrong for what Halvy needs. He'd need massive rehilting just to start, followed by quite a bit of grinding.

Russ? There's several options. The Darkwood 'bated rapiers' are much wider than the 'practice rapiers'. Depends how much flex you want.

yea he's got some cool stuff these days which he should put pics up of them. They even got a CT legal Zweihainder using a rapier blade and some other stuff theyve wrapped their brains arround.
