Re: Black Barrel
The black ones are often cleaning agents or chemicals.
Try Craigslist rarely will you pay more that $20.
Someone in your local sca group may already have a lead.
Make sure the chemicals are removed and properly nutralized.
Haveing something react as you wear it or shape with heat can cause problems.
Because your going to wrap the plates or cover with fabric other colors may be easier to find.
One local duke uses a padded gambison over a Swiss cheese churburg 13 style breastplate.

Check local car wash too. You might not get black barrels, but you also probably won't have to pay either.

Re: Black Barrel
If black is your thing, you may want to consider ordering Kydex.
3/16" or 1/4" seems to give good protection for SCA heavy combat.

They made other colours of kydex back in the early 1980's too.

My problem with that bit of knowledge is this "At the time, I was too young to know why Clinton was in trouble"

Re: Black Barrel
Thanks everyone. I was gonna make some halo-ish stuff for my son with plastic.
I have some black abs, but I was gonna save that.

Was it meant to be functional, or merely decorative?

Re: Black Barrel
You ought to look at using 5 gallon buckets. Firehouse subs sells them for a couple bucks each. Would be more lightweight too.
