Leather/[gulp] plastic Lamellar Scales?

Post by Lucian Ro »

Yes, yes, since I can't locate any aluminum scalloped lamellar plates within a reasonable amount of time, I was wondering if anyone knew of persons selling prefabricated leather or ... grrr ... plastic lamellae?
I prefer the scalloped or 'bullet' shaped design.

Anyone?

Thanks in advance, folks.

...Or his squire can post the info for you.
Ulrich, the link doesn't work, BTW.

How many leather plates would you like?

I've been turning my scraps in to lamellae for a long term project... so I've got a few kicking around, with about 75% left to go.... about 1 3/4" long by about 1" wide... not yet hardened though...

Link worked for me. I have a set of the Noble plastic lamellae in pewter. Easily passes the 10 ft. rule, and durable as heck. I am making a metal dress set, but I like the plastic most of the time. I fight 2-3 times a week and you can't beat the upkeep.

I make mine out of brown plastic garden edging. It's a brown foamed plastic. The whole shirt weighs about 4 pounds. The 4 inch stuff you get at most garden stores. It look like brown lacquered leather. If I hadn't laced it up with green paracord it would look much better. The stuff is lighter than most other body armor types, to include ABS type plastics. The only plates I've broken are the ones on the hip areas (both left and right). With a gambeson it takes most shots and is still pretty easy to tell if a shot is good or not (at least in the Outlands, Drachenwald and Estrella Wars). The rest of the plates on the body get enough give on a shot to hold up well. The hip plates do need the occasional repair job.

And a Image from the catacombs...

Emailed Noble Plastics on December 30th and asked about a sampler pack. She mailed them New Years Eve, and they arrived today. Nice plates, very smooth holes and tough. It is -35° here today (not exaggerating, it is cold enough to kill), and the plates were frozen solid when I got them. Since they were free, I tore open the package, pulled on out, and threw it -while still frozen- against the pavement as hard as I could. Didn't shatter or even scratch.

I'm not crazy about plastic armour, but these are nice. I got pewter, copper, bugundy and brown. The pewter is cheezy looking, the brown and burgundy look so much like leather it is eerie, and the copper is perhaps not the most historical choice, but is just so sexy. My only gripe is that they are quite big. Definetly going to make a corselet this month.

Wow. That looks... really nice...

I do have to wonder about the disclaimer, though: "Plastic lamellar will not prevent injury."

Would metal ones prevent injury?

Muttman is a fighter in my Barony. He has a VERY nice set of plastic lamellar (it MAY be scale) and even a few feet from it, I thought it was leather. He did a great job on it.

Although Mutts was built by Thaddeus, hand cut scales from black plastic barrel.
