FS-BotN, ACL 410 Spring Steel 14c Spaulders

Post by ARMOURER ERIC »

The first product ever produced by James River Armoury from 410 Spring Stainless :o.

These are made from .040" 410 Spring Stainless, treated and temepered by Craig Nadler here on the Archive. Polished to a 120 Grit Formax Satin Glo finish then polished with Formax black emery. This is for the set shown in the below pic. For comparison, a set of spaulders I sell on eay without any strapping weights 2.69 pounds for the pair. These with full strapping and arming tab weighs 2.07 pounds for the pair, or slightly over 1 pound each. I will taking any proceeds from this item to purchase more .040" 410 SS so I can finish a sampling of spring stainless items I have started including 3 more sets of spaulders with a rolled bottom lame, 2 pair of elbows, 2 sets of 16" knee joints and a set of German Gothic Spaulders. All of my 410 offerings will only be available in the "premium" versions I offer on mild products. The premium versions will all have rolled edges, medial center ridges, stotted articulation points, arming tabs and historically correct buckles and straps where appropriate.

If you call dibs, please PM me with your paypal email address, and I will send you a corporate invoice ASAP, you will have 48 hours to pay or I will move on to who is next. It is my goal to make the same offerings found for the last 14 years on ebay available in both 1050 and 410, but they will only be exclusively available at the auction site, Medieval Town Square.

The asking price for these is $185 plus $15 shipping. Future sets will be more.

To be clear. 410 is NOT spring stainless but hardened stainless. It is hard and works well for ACL/BoN combat. The difference is that 301 spring stainless will yield more before shattering or cracking as it is spring stainless.

Nice stuff Eric!

"Spring Stainless" or "Spring Steel" are vague marketing terms with no clear definition. Both hardened 410 stainless steel tempered for 2 hours at 400F and full hard 301 stainless steel will yield before failing. 410 stainless has a high yield strength, but lower rust resistance than full hard 301 stainless steel.

Quite a number of manufacturers and vendors disagree with this assertion. Both 410 and 301 can be made very hard or very crack resistant depending on how they're treated. 410 hardens through heating and quenching like medieval armourers and blade smiths performed, and like most tool steels and other spring steels. 301 doesn't harden through heat, but through work hardening.
