Market survey, single hand spears.

I'm thinking about doing a run on single hand spears.
I was thinking about doing fiberglass spears but I think first I want to make rattan spears.
I'm thinking 48- 60 inches stained rattan. Ill use skinned straightened rattan so they are nice and strait.
The low profile 2 inch thrusting tips.
And I can probably keep the price down around $40.00 plus shipping.
If I can get enough interest ill pump them out pretty quickly, I'm off for the summer so time is currently bountiful.

Fenian, not my normal form, but I know guys who fight with them. My impression from them, and what I'd be doing if I was to try one, is that something more like six to seven feet is what makes spear-and-shield fun and viable.

Just trying to provide a data point for you.

I may buy a pair. Spear/shield duels could be crazy fun.

I might be interested in this too.

If anyone finds some heavy fighting videos on shield/short spear post them!

Only time I've seen something like it was a war fighter who used a slightly undersized round shield and short spear combo. He was incredibly mobile, and hard to keep up with.

Seems more viable for wars due to the limited space in tourneys.

Check Youtube for Aethelmearc Crown tournaments. Havoc uses sword and short spear quite often.

Horizontal gripped ( not f-ing strapped) ovoid "hide" or trapezoid and shield is a very capable combo - spear length about 5 to 5-1/2 feet from our experience and that was the Norm for most "Iron Age" and Migration Celtic and Germanics , the shield will create a good standoff to allow thrust with the spear

i think im going to go with 5 ft shafts, maybe a end cap so i can balance them a bit towards the rear. then the tp should end up close to 5 ft. 4 or 5.

I'm actually making a 7' one right now, to fight with my greek aspis shield once it gets in. Will let you know how 7' works out, for future for you. Granted, 6'6" but the 2" thrusting tips bring them to 7'. But its also a slashing spear like it would of been back then, with the lizard killer(buttspike)
