Excellent book for research, amazing full color photos of extant European shields from the 10th century to the 14th and a few later. One chapter delves into the constructio methods and even a tutorial on making your own.
The downside is it is in German. However, if you are not able to read German, it is still an amazing reference source.

OK, fair's fair. It's too good to pass up, so I will take it and re-jigger my other priorities. Marcus, if you want specific pictures or information from it, I'll be happy to scan or copy some excerpts for you, and translate the best I can.

I think I need to see if I can ILL a copy of that.
It looks like it's 24 Euro on Amazon.de, which wouldn't come out too, too much over $40 with trans-Atlantic shipping. Cheapest US copy I see is ~$48, + shipping.
