FS: Blackened Stainless Spangenhelm with Drape (LOWER PRICE)

Post by bhaiduk »

I have a Hjalmr stainless steel Spangenhelm that I have done a lot of cleaning up on. I took one of his rough finished helms and sanded, brown scrubbie padded, and wire wheeled the top. Then I used Caswell's stainless steel blackener to give it an aged look. I sanded the black off of the nasal to give it a little pop and highlight it. I drilled holes around the brow to rivet the drape on and along the cheeks to stitch the drape to the bar grill. I painted the exposed bar grill with a black enamel because I think they are mild steel and to make them blend into the background. The drape is made from split leather and is stitched on with artificial sinew. It's un-padded, un-strapped and un-used. If you tell me where and how big I can drill holes to mount a chin strap as it can be a bear to drill stainless if you don't have a good drill and twist bits.
It has a few flaws. None of which are very noticeable, but wouldn't feel right selling it without listing them here. The finish is not perfect. It's way better than the rough finish it started as, but it is not the perfect smooth even finish of $500+ helm done by a professional. The drape was made from a split leather welding apron and has a few (5) holes in it from where I took the pockets off. Four of them are in the back. Two of those are spaced evenly along the brow line in between the rivets. You can see one of these in the picture that has the view of the back. The other hole is in the front and can be seen in the straight on shot in the lower left of the picture. This one could be cut out by making the drape about an inch shorter as it's right on the edge. Also, if you look at the helm from a birds eye view, you can see that the side spangen panel don't match up perfectly. You can only really see this from top so it's not very noticeable. You can see what I'm talking about in the fifth photo down.
The inside dimensions are 8 3/4" front to back and 8 1/2" side to side. If I'm not mistaken, Hjalmr makes these helms from 14 ga. stainless. I would like $220. Buyer pays actual shipping cost or local pickup in the Oklahoma City area or at Bordermarch Autumn Melees. Let me know if you need anymore pics or info.

It's not an old apron. Harbour Freight had them on sale the other day, so I picked one up to use for this. Thanks for passing it on.

well poor choice of words on my part. welding apron. i have used them for a few other projects. cheap leather that is pretty sturdy.
and Hjamr makes bullet proof helms so whoever ends up taking this home will have a great helm.

I thought I had this sold locally, but that fell through, so :bump: .
Also, I will reduce my asking price to $220.

Greetings brother,

I think we would like this. However, we are not in a hurry to get it. So we can make the transaction at the next event we will both be at. For me those will be Candlemas in BG next weekend, War College a few weekends later and Gulf Wars. So, let me know if that will work for you.

Sounds good to me. The next events on my schedule are winter kingdom (tomorrow), Provincial games and then Gulf Wars, so let's plan on meeting at Gulf.

ROGER...

So, do you want me to send you money or bring the $220 to GW?

If you do want me to send it before...is PayPal ok?

Alternately, if you know someone who is going to the War College, you could send the helm earlier.
May God keep and bless you!
