Buying one used will likely not work at all due to the varying location of vervelles helm to helm. Buying a leather that hasn't been punched for vervelles may or may not do what you want, depending on the size of your helm versus the size of the leather.
Making the leather strap and stitching the maille on is not a terribly difficult project. It is boring and a bit finicky to make sure you don't bunch up the maille all funny, but not difficult.

its for a GDFB hounskull bascinet if that helps... but I have tried in the past to do it myself.. lets just say I have come to terms with the fact I have absolutely zero craft skills lol. maybe used would be fine if its the same helmet then? I'm open to new ones for sure.

Depending on where you are in Canada there may be someone local who can help.
sizing the leather/vervells/avaintail to the helm is a lot easier with the helm in front of you.
Being a GDFB helm The GDFB avaintail may work though I would talk with customer service first.

Unfortunately, the GDFB riveted aventails seem to be on permanent back order.
I have the butted one and would live to upgrade.

To make a pattern for the leather, use masking tape on the helm. Many layers of masking tape. Mark it to the shape you want the final leather to be, remove it and carefully cut it out. Stick the multi-layer masking tape pattern down on top of your leather, cut it out.
Buy a leather stitch punch (
http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-u ... 09-00.aspx) and punch hole all the way around the bottom edge.
Use artificial sinew to lace the maille to the leather. Generally, it is one or two links bunched together, not spread taught.
Punch vervelle holes as necessary - start in the center back.

What everyone else said about having the leather pre-attached is accurate -- you are better off not doing it that way.
If you are interested in the maille portion of the aventail, we can help you out.

remember people who do this kind of work for real want real money, where as people who do assembly work like the things that come from India will do it cheap and you get what you pay for ...do you really want the cheapest bidder for neck protection you balked at my price and now its gone. I just want you to look out for you and not wind up dead

I tried to negotiate a price and you called me a "Jew" instead of coming back with a counter offer... I'm glad you seem so concerned for my safety though, what a nice guy

I got a brand new flat ring riveted one for less and the seller didn't insult me with fascist insults

. Although if you're into that type of thing Ka0z is your man!
With that being said, this thread has served its purpose. Thanks all!
