padding for cuisses

I'm going to make some pairs of cuisses but I don't know how many layers of padding, is it 2 or 4? I've only made them once and that was a while ago and I don't remember.

If they're going to be standalone textile defenses and not just padding under steel or leather, I would pad 'em pretty thick- as in, sew the channels and then stuff them with batting or wool scraps until they look like full shotgun bandoliers. Flat quilted padding does not do much for a solid shot to the thigh, in my estimation. Of course, some fighters have a higher pain tolerance than I...
