Horsehair Helmet Crests - For Sale

After much consideration and considerable encouragement by my associates I have decided to determine if there is any interest on the archive for Horsehair Helmet Crests. I have included a few pictures of some of the latest pieces. If interested, please contact me directly at: EyvandR@westernspartans.com or send a private message.

Crests start at $225 for natural hair, and basic tooling. Natural Colors available are: White, Grey, Brown, and Black. Dyed colors are available in: Blue, Green, Orange, Purple, Red, Turquoise, and Yellow.

Tooling is also available for an additional fee based on design and difficulty.

Crests can be designed to mount directly to helms, or can be built to be inserted into your crest box. Transverse crests are also available for those of you with Roman and Greek helms.

These crests each contain roughly 2 pounds of horsehair so they are weighty, but the weight gives them stability and strength. You get an exceptionally full looking crest guaranteed to set you apart on the field.

Here are a few pictures of some of the latest crests. The Corinthian is my own personal helm with the alternating white and black crest. Semi-full tail and tooled box crest.

The second helm is a Roman Attic Helm where the crest is going to be inserted into a custom metal crest box.

These crests are based on a pattern initially designed by Sir Brand Lancaster (His Royal Highness), and similar crest can be seen on many of the Orkney's helms.

I'd order one for my corinthian helm but i have 2 problems.
1. My helm is still on the 3rd raising course.
2. It's about $150 out of my price range.
gorgeous crests though. when my helmets finished i might have to save up and splash out on one. wonderful work by the way.
also whilst we're here. could you pretty please post a picture of the corinthian helmet liner/suspension pretty please.

Thanks to everyone that has submitted interest. I will be posting a color wheel of the various colors available in the next week or so, I am still waiting on a few more color camples.

As for the liner and suspension, they are simply lined with foam that is glued into place. The corinthian is an SCA helms and I have not had any luck with suspension systems. To be honest I would be totally embarassed to post a pic of the inside of that helm. But I will take some and send them too you.

Let me know when your ready to have a crest made.

The helm was built by Tom of All Saints Armor. It was one of six that he did for the members of my household.

I work with Tom at All Saints Armory, sort of as an agent. I sell the generic items that he has completed at my site at www.Skaldic.com and also take it around to events, fighter practices and such to sell with my own leather work. His own site is not up yet but will be linked to my site. You can drop by and see what I have currently in stock. I can also field some questions in regards to custom work.

Hmmm... After the kid comes I'll have to save up for that.
Also do a little bit of searching. See if it would actually go with my helm (period wise anyway).

I have one of WMA's late period roman helms.

I have just added a picture of the availabe dyed horsehair colors to the 1st post. Please take a moment to review that image if your interested in other colors for your crest.

I must say that I am extremely happy with the depth of the colors. They have exceptional vibrancy and will look outstanding in a crest.

Mine's the purple-and-black, and boy am I a happy camper. EyvandR was a joy to do business with - responsive, friendly, willing to give advice and take it, kept me up-to-date at all times. I highly recommend him and his work.

I'll be posting a review of his crest and the White Mountain helm it is attached to soon, but I wanted to give him a little support in the meantime.

Thanks, man.

Let me shill for EyvandR for a moment. I ordered a horsehair crest from him recently after seeing him post of the Archive. Not only was he responsive and professional throughout the entire process, but his input was more than helpful. He waited until we had everything right before starting, and the crest was completed very quickly. He even started over atone point when he was personally unsatisfied with how the project was progressing. I can't give him high enough praise.

You can see the results on this thread - the finished crest is gorgeous. I hope he stays in business for a long time.

Some additional picutes of some of my later pieces

Here are a few pics of some of my latest helmets. This is of Duke Jade's helm. In addition to this one, I have also done a red and yellow one for him as well. Recently I did a purple and yellow crest for Duke Icefalcon which many saw at Estrella this year.

I hope to post up a few more pics here in the near future.

Eyvander your crests kick ass but are way out of my price range right now. The exchange is still a killer! I took some pictures of Duke Icefalcon's crest at estrella this year in the hopes I might figure out how to replicate it. If you could give some pointers I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Sir Angar

Thanks. I really enjoyed working with Ice, and am currently in the works on another project for him at the moment. If you want some information, contact me via e-mail and we can talk there.

Eyvandr rocks. His product is underpriced. That is why I ordered 2 of them. He has more attention to detail than most laurels I know.

I was EXTREMELY happy with the first crest and I am axiously waiting to see the next one....

Let me guess- that book Gates of Fire is why there is a huge Greek/Spartan thing growing out there....

Acutally, my friends in the West (Western Spartans) asked me to come fight with them at Estrella. Since I have alate period Kraut kit, I thought I would stick out like a sore thum. They inspried me to get a Greek kit together. I had a blast getting another harness together that was completely different than what I usually wear. It really put a spark in my SCA life this year. Fighting along side of some of my best friends from the West was just the icing on the cake.... :)

I took a Greek Mythology class in Junior high in 1984 and have been hooked since. When I got into the sca in 93 the guys helping get me into Armour were all Vikings so it was natural to follow suit. Ice Falcon's gear at Estrella has inspired me to put together a Greek kit.

The Book "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield is awesome. It's out of print so it can be a challenge to find. Another good one is "The Ten Thousand" by Michael Curtis Ford.

I don't doubt that Eyvandr's stuff is under priced . They are the best I've ever seen but unfortuntly, they are still more than I can afford right now.

Anybody have any documentation of Gallic, (or any other Celts) using such crests? IF so I'll be ordering.

Pardon the question in the the Gunther of Orkney post, fellow Armour Archivers. I do believe I've found the man!

Just a historical note, I remember reading recently (by what seemed to be a reasonably informed source) that there is no record of Greeks ever using dyed horsehair in their crests. So only dark & blonde (i.e. natural colors) would be accurate, according to that source.

I know. Some folks will care and some won't. But it never hurts to be informed. If anybody cares, I'll try and find the source.

Cheers,
Tim

Yep, I have seen what seem to have been depictions of Continental Gauls wearing them. If I come across them again, I'll note the source for you.

I see in Connollys: Greece and Rome at War; page 226 The montifortino type, for the 1st cent BCE-AD, a crest something like the SCA generiversion. I think my Belgians are in need of a tail trim, don't you?

Wow...... something has changed since my last post (2004).

Oh yeah!! I finally have one of those nice greek/roman helms (thracian to be exact) to put it on!!!

I was just thinking that now that my greaves are on the way..it might be time to get a crest for my helm as well.

I haven't seen Evandyr's crest's in person but looking at the activity level of folks who wear them I have no fear that they will hold up in combat.
