Attatching an aventail to a kettle is a goal of mine, but its alot more difficult than it seems, or atleast it is to make it meet my asthetics.
I realy dont want any loose mail flopping around, and that presents some challenges.
When i build a helmet its designed to work right out of the box, hanging something from the front may solve the issues, but it does not solve it for me as my customers should not have to do something like that to their new hat.

It seems a simple task, but its realy not, it requires something that makes me very twitchy, cutting a face out of the maile, i have to do it on my face plate spangen and it makes me tense every time.

I'd recommend buying a mail coif and cutting the top out of it or finding the high aventail that T-Bob mentioned and riveting it to a leather flap that's attached to the brim rivets. (I don't know if yours has them but the WMA helm I used to own had rivets around the inner brim).

The coif would then drape over the bars around the sides and back and yet not be in the way of the face.

This way it would appear that you were wearing a coif underneath the hat (which is plausible) without the discomfort. Makes perfect sense, I like T-Bob's idea so much and seeing this helm makes me want another one *cry*. Nice work WMA!

I am planning to do the same thing but make the coif out of soft leather with round metal plates attched, totaly athstetic and much lighter than a maile coif (although I may do a "coif" in aluminum later). I plan on letting it drape down below my shoulders. I plan on making one out of cloth with my "house" colors as well. I will use gromets/eyelets to lace it on to the bars under the brim and around the face. If all goes well it should look like a hood worn under the Kettle.
Now I just have to wait till my helm is ready  ... by the way Adam, could you tell me where I am on your list? I have the final payment ready when you are thx.
Cheers,

I am planning a gamboised aventail for mine. If I accomplish this and it works, I'll be happy to give you the pattern, Adam. DOn't know when I will do it though---but certainly before next summer.
