Need Review: King's Lance $300 mail hauberk

Post by T. Finkas »

Have you bought one of these from King's Lance?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 6&tc=photo

What do you think of it? How did it fit/what chest size are you?

Thanks,
Tim

Winterfell has one of these shirts. I can barely get it on but I wear a 48L jacket.

As far as looks, the rivet heads are wrong (of coarse), and the rings are a bit on the large size on the 18g, I like the look of the 16g myself though it weights quite a bit more.

Over all if it fits you it looks good for $300. Not as good as an 8mm or 9mm wedge shirt but far better than butted or round riveted.

Nothing wrong with the rivet heads, they are just round.

I thought they where round on top with a hex shape under part which was funny looking, but I could be wrong, been a while since I looked.

It is about as basic as you get but it is exactly what is advertized. I've worn mine to fight in 5 or 6 times, and have not seen any damage.

I'm 5 ft 8 and 190lbs. Its a bit tight across the chest for me.

It shows the fact my ideal weight is around 170lbs.

Worthwhile purchase.

I have one, 3/8ID 18ga flat ring, round rivet (both sides), and I wear it to fight in. (SCA)

The first few times out it lost some rings. After finding a few of the rings I concluded that the rings were not failing, as much as the faulty rings were ripping out the rivits. (Off center punch.)
I think after about 5-6 fights, all those that were going to fail, had failed.

The maille itself is very very shiney. You will want to dull it, I have not dulled mine yet, but that is just me being lazy.

Over all I like it. The wieght is not bad. I am 5'8" about 190 lbs, and have a 48"chest. Mine fits fine over my gambeson and body plates. It does not however reach more than about 9" down my leg. It needs about another 6" to be of decent length. The sleeves are 1/2 sleeves and reach to just past my elbow cop.

I got mine from Sulla, he says it came from Kingslance, I have no reason to doubt him.

When I have the money, I will be buying another one. I wanna try and make chausses out of it. (After I take the 6"s I need to make the hauberk the right length,

As a pretty outer layer, it is very nice.

You might also look into a guy called ringmesh
This is his website

My Knight got one of ringmesh's hauberks. 9 lbs, stainless steel micro rings. It looks like mithril and wears great, according to my Knight. And they were/are about $229 US.

I have one. Decent quality... a few badly punched rings, but not enough to really concern me. Good communication and customer service, well worth the price.

I just got one with flattened rings a couple weeks ago. Like someone else, I ordered the 16g, but I suspect it might be the 18g one. I didn't see any mistakes in the pattern, but I'm no expert. The fit is good: the online pics make the neckhole look too big, but in fact it passes rather snugly around my 23 1/2 head and looks just fine when worn. Some of the rivet heads seem to stick out a bit far. I have found about 5 rings on my floor that fell off from not being riveted, but otherwose I haven't seen any unriveted rings. The sleeves are too long, so I plan to cut them down and use the leftover for making a helm drape at some point in the future. The weave is thick enough not to readily show the foundation garments.

All-in-all I am highly satisfied and feel like I got my moneys worth.

BTW: I got mine from www.wholesalearmor.com , which I believe is Kingslance's non-ebay store. I ordered it on a Monday or Tuesday night and it shipped from TX to TN, arriving at my house that Friday. They provided a link to track my package with my email reciept.
